Ta-Nehisi Coates poses an inquisition about how Whites haven't made the past right. Coates states simply that Whites never truely made it up to the Blacks for slavery. The Whites had just said, "we meant well" and moved on. Coates brings this up by comparing the Whites "good intentions" to a sleeping pill. The idea of "good intention" is seen throughout history, not just American but worldwide. But how could one apologize for the past and make it right with those wronged? It's near impossible question to answer. Because how does one apologize for something that is like slavery?…
Churchill creates a sense of urgency in his speech "Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat". He is trying to convey the messages that the war needs to be won, and that parliament and the people need to get behind his government for that to happen. By analyzing his tone, word choice, and rhythm, we can interpret his opinion and the sense of urgency. In paragraph 2 it says, "It was necessary that this should be done in one single day on account of the extreme urgency and rigor of events. "…
Thirdly, purpose can be used to help the reader determine the tone of text because it demonstrates how a speaker conveyed this context and what the speaker was trying to spark in the audience. Quote by Tom Clancy says, “The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.” Roughly translates that the difference between reality and fiction would be that fiction has to be understandable. Reality doesn’t necessarily need an explanation, it is what it is. Most people are more likely to question fiction rather than questioning reality due to the fear of being wrong. Fear is a strong emotion that thrives in every human being in the world. Fear can either motivate or it intimidate a person, it all depends on who the person is. That…
In his book Human Rights and Global Diversity, Robert Paul Churchill aims to identify and emphasize the universality of human rights, arguing that “human beings everywhere have the same human right” (Churchill xi). Churchill proposes that cross-cultural negotiations must be implemented to bridge the gap between cultural differences and gain international consensus of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). With respect to valuing the UDHR and promoting universal human rights regardless of culture, the best method of cross-cultural negotiation is the transformational strategy. This method would be the most successful because its broad use of human rights language allows for worldwide communication and participation, thus eliminating…
Even if his country was laid to ruin, Machiavelli would show great distain if its president were to promise to pardon his people to uphold his own consciousness then what is needed for the welfare of the nation. To process a kind heart is a grand gift, however it’s a weakness others will abuse making you open to manipulation from neighboring kings. Machiavelli argues that”… it is unnecessary for a prince to have all the good qualities I have enumerated, but it is very necessary to appear to have them.” To be able to truly rule over a land, you must be ruthless in your action, yet be cleaver to appear benevolent to avoid enemy ploys. This is a point Machiavelli points out as “Those who rely simply on the lion do not understand what they are…

" We are still our masters of our fate. We are still captains of our soul." -Winston Churchill. This powerful quote by Winston Churchill explains that you yourself control your fate and soul, not anyone else. The decisions you make affect your own life the most. Stating that if anyone tries to control your life for you, it doesn't change that fact that it is your life still your fate, still your soul. Another person shouldn't worry about your decisions if it doesn't affect them. This quote helps remind people the importance of making the right decisions to benefit you. It also helps remind themselves that they are in control. For example when in a time of deciding a life changing experience the key is to know how it will benefit you. Also another…

He is not easy to describe. There is something wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something downright detestable. I never saw a man I so disliked, and yet I scarce know why. He must be deformed somewhere; he gives a strong feeling of deformity, although I couldn’t specify the point. He’s an extraordinary-looking man, and yet I really can name nothing out of the way. No, sir; I can make no hand of it; I can’t describe him. And it’s not want of memory; for I declare I can see him this moment.…
“The moral order has to catch up with the moral necessities of actual life in time, here and now.” What Joseph Campbell means is that people who are living now have to live by their own morals and standards, not those of their previous generations. The “moral order” he talks about is the set of values and ethics people follow in daily life. As time progresses, society changes, and its social norms have to change along with it.…
Benjamin Franklin once said “If your head is wax, don’t walk in the sun”. Franklin had created an aphorism. Webster’s dictionary defines an aphorism as “a short phrase that expresses a true or wise idea” (Aphorism). Franklin modified most of his aphorisms to correspond with traditional or folk sayings, known as proverbs. This aphorism is parallel to a Russian proverb that instructs, “One who sits between two chairs may easily fall down”. What do these proverbs mean? How are they similar? Why do different cultures preserve similar kinds of wisdom? All of these questions can be answered by first knowing who Benjamin Franklin was, and understanding how these aphorisms reflect the time period in which they were created in.…
The Little Prince’s planet could be a metaphor for a number of things. My interpretation is that the Little Prince living on his own little planet is equal to a person that lives in their mind, or in “their own little world”. So really I view the little planet as a smaller simpler view of the world. And when I apply that perspective to this quote, it takes on a whole new meaning. The Little Prince spends a few minutes each day tearing up the baobabs that grow on his planet. As a metaphor, this seems to me to be akin to meditation, or something similar. At least a few minutes each day, I suppose, should be spent in the mind, sorting out one’s thoughts and pulling up the baobabs. If you spend too much time outside your little world in the adult world, there is a good chance that the baobabs will grow too large and outgrow your little world.…
“As I look ahead, I am filled with foreboding; like the Roman, I seem to see “The River Tiber foaming with much blood.” These were the famous words of Enoch Powell in his “Rivers of Blood” speech. With his use of rhetorical devices and fallacies, his speech came off as very effective.…
