Winston Churchill's 'We Are Still Captain Of Our Soul'
" We are still our masters of our fate. We are still captains of our soul." -Winston Churchill. This powerful quote by Winston Churchill explains that you yourself control your fate and soul, not anyone else. The decisions you make affect your own life the most. Stating that if anyone tries to control your life for you, it doesn't change that fact that it is your life still your fate, still your soul. Another person shouldn't worry about your decisions if it doesn't affect them. This quote helps remind people the importance of making the right decisions to benefit you. It also helps remind themselves that they are in control. For example when in a time of deciding a life changing experience the key is to know how it will benefit you. Also another

Think before making a major decision, if not you will regret it. This relates to the story "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst when he describes the theme of death in many ways. " the carpenter built a little mahogany coffin for him for him " when his parents didn't think the child would live. His Aunt Nicey also said " red dead birds are bad luck " when a Scarlet Ibis died right in front of the family one day during dinner. I think the author wanted the readers to think about the meaning of these sayings and take it to heart.…

“I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul,” wrote poet William Ernest Henley in his 1875 poem “Invictus.” When I first read these two lines I immediately felt troubled as I began to think about the amount of control I have in my life and who really makes the majority of decisions that affect me. After reading this poem I had a strong desire to seize control of my life by attempting to become more independent so that I could make more of the important decisions that affect my daily life.…

There’s an old saying by Eleanor Roosevelt that states “You can never really live anyone else's life, not even your child's. The influence you exert is through your own life, and what you've become yourself.” I believe this statement is true. However, what Eleanor Roosevelt fails to mention was who, or what kind of people come into our lives and influence us to change for the better. Do these particular individuals shape our paths, or our futures? Or when these people come into our lives is it meant to happen for a reason? No one knows for sure, but when we meet someone who leaves such a profound effect on our hearts and minds, like foot prints in the sand we remember them forever. Ben Carson always mentions that his mother helped shaped his life, as well as his family, students, teachers, his strong belief in god, and his love for books helped shaped his future. Throughout middle school, high school and college these key influences would lead him to what he has become today.…

Listening to so many different opinions and so many discouraging words can become a hindrance. Avicii implies through his ethos “I tried carrying the weight of the world/But I only have two hands” meaning that the words of others can be demanding, but he is only one person and he should not have to carry their burdens of what they believe should be his fate. The words of others can be so heavy sometimes that it can make future goals gloomy and not clear. However, choosing to be aware of being a unique individual is what can set a person apart from carrying the weight or deciding to be different. A person can use the negativity as their driving force to which can give the push they need to…

Choices shape our lives in many ways. It is impossible to go through life without making any. What we choose can define us, can close off a part of our life that, had we chosen differently, could have led to something completely different. Many things can influence our choices, from morals, to peers, to experience.…

My connections look at how certain choices can affect your life forever. The texts that I used to convey this link were The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle, The Shawshank Redemption directed by Frank Darabont and a poem by Robert Frost called The Road Not Taken. Throughout the texts used we learn that you cannot always see the outcome of a particular choice unless you choose to go down that path. An important decision is made by the main character(s) in each text and they suggest that not all choices are easy to make and can have positive and negative consequences.…

A British prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli has stated “Circumstances are beyond the control of man, but his conduct is in his own power.” This quote is valid as Disraeli teaches us that we should concern ourselves with how we should react to situations and events we encounter, even though we can't predict the future. Ultimately, this is all we are in control of and responsible for. I concur with this quote, as we can't control what happens, but we have the power to make decisions for ourselves. The Stranger by Albert Camus and The Crucible by Arthur Miller are two great pieces of literature that strongly reflect this quote. The protagonists in both stories are presented with several options to choose from, yet the outcome is out of their control.…

The most important factor in why people choose to do something is the outcome of what he or she is doing. When someone does something they usually think ahead because they want to know if what they are doing is going to react in a negative or in a positive manner. Some people choose to do something because of how it will make them feel instead of how it will effect them and their life. But, even though some people choose to do something based on how it will make them feel inside, most people do things because they want something out of it, even if it is not always good.…

Winston Churchill once said, “Only a man with no heart would be conservative when he is young; only a man with no brain would be liberal when he is older” and this proved to be very true. Winston Churchill is directly saying that young people are liberals while old people are conservatives. This Quote implies that liberals are not very smart and young people are generally liberal and that conservatives are not very kind and genuine and old people are generally conservative. This Quote also implies that if a young person is not liberal, he is not kind and if an old person is not conservative when he is old, he is not smart. This theory does prove to be true as it is proven by the actions and beliefs of conservatives and liberals and through the old and young generation beliefs.…

Today’s generation is very modern. high-tech and fast paced. Everything that is happening is so quick. There may be a time you will not notice that your life has changed on a single snap. Everything what people want, everything people want to say and everything people do is immediate. Everything people need is just a click away. Without knowing, troubles and regrets are also a click away. Many suffer on their own instant decisions and actions without thinking. Some people are the victims of what they do. Some people act without thinking but some also are those who keep on thinking without acting. Better yet, before doing something, THINK. Stop, think, think again and act. For example, you wanted to post in your facebook account, twitter or in other social networks. Think if what would be the possible reactions of the people who can read it. You might don’t know it but still think of what would be. Another, you upload pictures to the internet where you will lose control of it for it can be copied or even can be displayed by anyone and anywhere without your consent. Think. Will you be glad for everyone to see or use your pictures? You and your friends decided to visit a place. Think if it could take you to risks or troubles. Think about what could happen before you go, so that you can prepare and set-up plans to keep you and your companions safe and sound. It is very important to think before you act. When you make spontaneous decisions, over and over again you will look back at the consequences and regret the decisions. We are human and along the way, we make mistakes but learn from those mistakes. People commit mistakes but only the wise ones learn from their mistakes. Be one of wise men. Instead of feeling like a failure or a disappointment, use the failure as the weapon to take back control of yourself, your life. Do not allow your failure to be the reason or as an excuse for you to keep on making errors in your life.…
