William Armstrong Short Story
“We don’t get to choose if we get hurt in this world, we do have some say in who.” -John Green. They thought for sure he was going to die. Doodle is a happy little boy that has a compact body, with parents that think they know for sure he is going to perish in less than a month. This is the story of William Armstrong, also known to some, as Doodle.
To begin with, Doodle is expected to die; he has quite a delicate heart that puts up limitations for letting him to actually be a kid. Everyone, from doctors, to his parents, to his Aunt Nicey seem to think that Doodle will die. His brother has been the only one to really believe that he will live for a long time. But that didn’t matter to anyone else what his brother thought; they began to think this so much that they built a mahogany coffin for him. But after three months he hadn’t died, his mother and father named him William Armstrong, because they thought he could use a name. However, his older brother thought that name was only fit for a person whose name was to be carved on top of the lid of of a coffin, so he began to call him Doodle, after the doodle bug, because that is what he had …show more content…
He couldn’t be anywhere without wanting his brother to be there with him, which is understandable considering he’s almost eight. However, to his brother he seemed to be a nuisance, because he had to take Doodle to Old Woman swamp. Doodle had been very grateful of his brother since his brother taught him to walk. Doodle was always strong, no matter how much every one of his family members said that he would die, that he would never walk, never live to see adulthood; Doodle proved them wrong on everything except for the last one. Now to the Scarlet Ibis, this bird was a major turning point in the short story, because it died the same way as Doodle had died. This created so much irony and gave such shock that it was what really made the story something to
