Why Small Businesses Fail to Grow?
"No one is rich or poor who has not helped himself to be so." - German Proverb

These words represent one of the strongest motivations by which individuals seek to become entrepreneurs. An entrepreneur can simply be defined as someone who undertakes and operates a business venture. History has shown that many have chosen to chart this course of self employment in a bid to play a role in determining their own destinies. However, the process of undertaking the business venture is where the challenges and problems lie. There are a number of factors that could ultimately lead to the downfall of small businesses such as: the failure to draw a proper business plan, insufficient capital, entry of a new competitor, having a seasonal business; to mention a few. These factors can be grouped as internally generated; when caused by the entrepreneur himself, and externally generated, when caused by outside forces beyond his/her control.
The entrepreneur’s role in determining the success or failure of the business cannot be underestimated. Basically it’s not enough for an entrepreneur to have a great idea to achieve success, but the other steps and choices that are made after, lead to the business success or failure. Some entrepreneurs fail to grow their businesses because of the refusal to take responsibility for their mistakes, and then put the blame on other factors. By doing this they hinder themselves from thoroughly analysing the feasibility of the business idea and making necessary adjustments that may be required such as; securing more capital or hiring competent managers.

Furthermore, the entrepreneur has to be willing to do all it takes to make the business grow. At the early stages of any business, there are a number of administrative tasks that need to be carried out and usually the entrepreneur might have to multi task to get them done. This failure to put in enough effort could lead to other problems such as: absence of performance

    Most new businesses fail within the first five years of starting. Some people mistake a business for a hobby; just because you love something doesn't mean you should convert it into a business. Too often businesses fail because the owner feels their passion is shared by others. Other businesses plan poorly; yes, you must have a business plan. It can be a simple three page plan or a huge 20 page plan. The point is that you've looked at all the aspects of your business and are prepared to handle problems when they arise. Your business plan helps you to focus on your goals and your vision, as well as setting out plans to accomplishing them. Often businesses are very slow to get off the ground, you have to create and use a realistic business budget, and not constantly drain the business income on personal spending. There are so many roles to play when running a business, from marketing and selling in order to run a business effectively. On top of that, you have to understand the industry your business is in, the skills required to offer your products and services, and the trends in that industry. I think the main cause of businesses going under is poor customer service. Once you have a customer, you have to keep them. There are two key points to customer service make sure you pay attention to what the customer wants (and how these wants can change over time), and make sure you provide quick return of phone calls and emails, proper billing, problem solving and an overall pleasant demeanor. Competition will kill a new business, almost as quick as poor customer service. Customers will go where they can find the best products and services. It's important to know who your competition is, what they have to offer, and what makes your own products or services better. Putting off tasks that you don't enjoy will sink…

    Purpose – To show that the inability to adapt to a series of crises caused by business development is one of the principal causes of failure for all organisations and that one of the primary components in small business success must be the managerial competence of the principal actors, inevitably the owner-manager. Design/methodology/approach – This paper examines the divergence between the prescribed and assumed models of entrepreneurial behaviour provided by contemporary management theorists and the real, observed and reported behaviour of small business practitioners and owner-managers. It reports on case study examples and highlights the dichotomy between expected and actual behaviour in typical management situations. Findings – The paper suggests that the almost egotistical attitude displayed by many entrepreneurs, constitutes an abuse of the trust and the power placed in the hands of small business owner-managers and that in extreme instances, the abuse of entrepreneurial power may lead directly to the failure of the small firm. Originality/value – Many surveys of small business failure and sub-optimal performance often suggest situational and operational causes and explanations.
