Why Should Kids Get Trophies
Should Kids get Trophies? Do you do things for the fun of it or for a prize? Many kids think they should get a trophy. Parents think otherwise they think getting a trophy is sending the wrong message. Trophies aren’t for everyone and everything, because trophies lose their meaning if everyone gets one, also trophies aren’t effective ways for coaches to bribe the team to do better, and you should do things for fun not for a prize. Trophies aren’t effective ways for coaches to bribe the team to do better. “Receiving a pat on the back or a thumbs-up from a coach… any show of appreciation is what keeps kids coming back.” “Kids need to know they don’t need to win every time. It’s O.K. to lose, to make a mistake.” I can relate the evidence

Many children that compete in youth sports receive trophies for their participation. The question is, are these trophies leaving a positive or a negative impact towards children. Supporting participation trophies, Lisa Heffernan states that it does teach children good values with her argument titled “In Defense of Participation Trophies”. Trophy; a cup or other decorative object awarded as a prize for a victory or success. Just to get one thing straight trophy does not mean a decorative object given to people for trying. These days it is easily misinterpreted due to just anyone getting a medal for sitting on the bench all year. If you don’t play and never get put in then let’s be honest, you are not going to feel the least bit confident. Could you imagine being in that persons shoes, it would be awful. Well why should, you be given a reward for showing up to a practice, good question isn’t it. Getting something that you know you don’t deserve, ultimately setting a child up for failure, but on the other side trophies given to you for a reason is a great way to boost someone’s’…

Rewarding Mediocrity is dangerous, especially with kids, because it will shape their expectation to be winning trophies in everything they attend. Because as a kid, they will ask themselves “ I have achieved this big trophy, why don’t I have this one?” and over the time there will be 2 things can happen. One is this kid will have a mindset of winning and have narcissistic about themselves about being number one, then when they attend a true competition or selective events, they will extremely disappointed and criticize with themselves hardly if they’re not a winner or if this kid is actually a top performance and see what they get is exactly the same with who did not try, they will ask themselves “why I need to work hard while what I…

I have quite a few trophies on my shelves. I went from being a lineman, to being a starting wide receiver. I have caught three touchdown passes. The first touchdown catch I ever had was probably the best meaning to me. I jumped when I got into the end zone because it was my first one and I was really happy. It was a deep streak into the end zone although, we did win the game. I caught a lot of passes against Lee high. I probably would have caught another touchdown but I got held against Honaker. During the Honaker game I got my knee hit on some guy’s face mask and my knee was bothering me. When we played eastside I had a lot of big hits I accomplished them. Altogether, I have accomplished some pretty great things in my lifetime of playing football, baseball, and…

One reason, I believe kids don't deserve trophies for participation is that some don't deserve any. This reason is because if you have a unacceptable attitude towards your coach and teammates, you should not get a trophy. If your kid is misbehaving, you don't award them for inappropriate behavior. Why would you award them for having a bad attitude? Also some kids may not even show up to practice or even to some games. Those kids don't deserve one because that is teaching them that it is okay to skip games and practice. However, it is not okay to do that. If you want a trophy you should be at every practice and game trying.…

This is my second year on the Peabody Magnet High Soccer team, and I was even awarded the Coach’s award for playing midfield and made honorably mention in my district ranking. I also am the Co-Captain of the Peabody Flag line. Being on the soccer and flag teams taught me that hard work really pays off and really forced me to challenge myself. When the flag line first started, we did not have a coach or experience. Although we taught ourselves our own routines, techniques and twirls; we placed and won a 3rd place trophy in our first battle of the bands competition. It was the smallest trophy there, but it meant more to me than any big one could. It just proved to me again that if I put my mind to something I could accomplish…

Although no one is completely equal, everyone has their very own skills. A world without trophies is a world without success. Success is something anyone would want to strive for but an olympic gymnast should not be credited for olympic weightlifting for simply trying his or her best. This problem is very unnecessary and millions are affected by it each day. The traditional 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place need to stay in order to keep competition alive. Humans are indeed very competitive individuals, just like animals fighting for survival or food, if an animal put participation trophies into the equation that animal that came on top and won would be sharing his prize with another who lost. According Priceman participation trophies need to be refined properly so people understand their…

Overall, I believe that giving kids trophies for just participating is a bad thing. At a young age, kids have to learn to lose or just participate and get no reward for it. Winning and getting a trophy for it teaches them that if they do a good job and are successful at their certain sport, they will be rewarded for it. Losing teaches kids a great asset in life because life isn't all about sunshine and candy and rainbows. Life is tough and kids have to learn quickly that failure just another part of…

Merryman and Berdan argued that these participation trophies were bad, and send dangerous messages. Abate on the other hand argued that participation trophies were a good fueler for kids self esteem and desire to do better. Personally I agree with Merryman and Berdan, participation trophies are awarding children for simply putting in minimal effort. Merryman argues that children need to know its O.K. to lose. Not everyone can be a winner in life. However, Abate does a tremendous job of persuasion. Abate uses personal experience, and he strikes the readers with a feeling of pity because of statements like, “Watching a peer receive a trophy and not receiving one yourself can be degrading.” Readers know the experience can be true because of either experiencing similar or watching someone else experience the degrading feeling of not winning. Though Abate’s article may be full of pathos, he doesn’t give the reader’s much logos to look at, granted he does have some personal experience but he hardly introduces any research supporting his view. Out of the three articles, Merryman has the most convincing article because of her incredible amount of research, that includes links that the reader can follow; her ethos and pathos. Berdan, like Abate, uses a personal anecdote to support her claim, however…

Trophies are so satisfying when you receive one, but is it too far for a kid to get a trophy just for showing up? Yes it is, and there are numerous reasons to support this opinion. In particular, getting the same trophy other players are rewarded as well shows nothing worth awarding. Furthermore, trophies are not suppose to be an easy thing to achieve, or that demolishes the purpose of a trophy. I feel coaches give players too many trophies.…

Participation trophies are not doing anything but helping you kid be more successful and more positive going into things. My reasons are it’s just a sport it's not the MLB or the NBA it's just coach pitch, also it will only help with good sportsmanship make it so everyone is equal, lastly at that age you should only be playing for fun if you look at it like that it will just make it more enjoyable. First off it’s just a sport,…

Why do we give participation trophies or ribbons to kids? It is giving them a false sense of accomplishment. They really didn’t earn a trophy, yes they participated in the event, but they didn’t do enough to earn a trophy to show that they gave that extra determination to be better than the next kid. When we don’t push our children to be better all they are going to do is settle for mediocrity. If we have a society and generation that just settles for that mediocrity where will it put us as a…
