Why Kids Should Not Be Allowed To Win In Sport
Our society has its beliefs in how we should treat competition in young people. Rewarding all participants in youth activities and sports has become standard practice in American culture. Kids should not receive trophies for participation. If this was the case with the kids who had unpleasant attitudes and didn't even show up to practice would get a medal. That then teaching those kids its okay to act that way. This would also teach kids, they get an award for participating in an activity or sport.

One reason, I believe kids don't deserve trophies for participation is that some don't deserve any. This reason is because if you have a unacceptable attitude towards your coach and teammates, you should not get a trophy. If your kid is misbehaving, you don't award them for inappropriate behavior. Why would you award them for having a bad attitude? Also some kids may not even show up to practice or even to some games. Those kids don't deserve one because that is teaching them that it is okay to skip games and practice. However, it is not okay to do that. If you want a trophy you should be at every practice and game trying.

“Awards can be powerful motivators, but nonstop recognition does not inspire children to succeed. Instead, it can cause them to underachieve.”(Merryman) When kids start to do sports in middle school or high school they will think they get a award for being on the team, might even join the team to just get an award. No one wants their kids to go up to think they get an award for everything they do. They are young and don’t even know what a trophy really

Not to mention they have to do nothing, Kids don’t try as hard at sports. For kids to get a trophy now-a-days they only have to show up to the practices and games. They don’t have to do anything except participate in the games. Additionally, just a thumbs up or a pat on the back will keep them going. Because if you just show up and get rewarded, later in life you will be expecting a reward whenever you show up. So do kids really deserve a trophy for showing up. Plus a trophy is a way to show how you stood out from the rest, not so that everyone felt appreciated. Its also wrong because the more they get rewarded, then when they don't get rewarded they get upset.…

Awards will be given throughout life and if students are trained young that they always “win,” they will be set up for disappointment. In Corey Turner’s evaluation on this subject, a statement was made that explained, “Her daughter rarely showed up for her soccer team. She had a terrible attitude. At the end she got a giant trophy and would have been devastated had she not.” This kind of attitude will have an extremely harmful effect on most children if they are raised in that atmosphere.…

Giving a participation trophy to these young athletes for everything they do in life, can teach them that they will get a reward for doing what is required. Lastly, these trophies can put people down. When children that understand the whole participation concept receive these trophies, they think they are among many others who just showed up. They will eventually think they aren’t good enough. Instead of the trophies, why not just give them a very important speech that will help them become greater at a specific event? I believe that coaches and adults of higher authority can make kids successful by teaching them, rather than awarding…
