Why Is The Friar Lawrence Important In Romeo And Juliet
Friar Laurence and His String of Unfortunate Events During the tragic story of Romeo and Juliet, there was a character that continuously forwards the plans of Romeo and helps the dreams of Juliet. Friar Laurence is the town's pastor who also works in the science of herbs. The people of Verona know of the Friar’s cell as a safe place to go and confess their sins and seek advice, including Romeo Montague. Romeo seeks to the Friar to help him deal with his new love, Juliet Capulet. The whole kingdom of Verona knows of the ancient hatred between the two family names. The Friar becomes a key role in the plot of the play and is the main contributor of love and misfortune.
In hopes of ending the family feud, Friar Laurence agrees to wed Romeo to Juliet in secret at in his cell.
In one respect I'll thy assistant be;
For this alliance may so happy prove,
To turn your households' rancour to pure love. (II.iii.90-92)
Even though Friar Lawrence thinks that Romeo should not ask to marry Juliet so early, he grants Romeo’s wishes and agrees with good intentions. Friar Laurence …show more content…
Friar Laurence gives Juliet hope of seeing him again by giving her a sleeping potion, and promises that she will awaken with Romeo by her side. He is trying to help her back to her love. But in a turn of unfortunate events, Friar Laurence’s letter to Romeo about his lady’s ‘passing’ didn’t get received, but the news did. Romeo came back with death on his mind, and in the end they both met their tragic fates. Friar Laurence did not want any of this to happen, but him giving Juliet the potion further thickens the plot by adding a final climax to the epic love story. He unintentionally killed the two he spent countless hours trying to protect. Closing the play with an ironic, twist
