Why Is Punctuality Important In The Military
Punctuality is defined as “the habit of making appointed times.” Within the law enforcement profession, punctuality is a trait that is very valuable. Equal in value is the ability to be prepared in everything you do, large or small. In the following essay I will discuss the importance of punctuality, the importance of being properly prepared and how it relates to your personal and professional life. I will also discuss the ramifications a failure in either of these areas will have on my Academy classmates and my future co-workers at the Agawam Police Department.

When I think of someone that is very punctual, I immediately think of those in military and para-military organizations. As a soldier there have been more than a few occasions

It sounds cliché; yet, the ability to be properly prepared may save lives or prevent injury to innocent civilians. During my deployment to Kosovo, my preparedness was put to the test. My squad was just completing a 12-hour dismounted patrol in the mountains. We were now moving to our link-up point with the vehicles that would take us back to Camp Bondsteel. The last leg of our movement was approximately 4 miles on a road that ran all the way into Serbia. During our movement, we wandered through a U.S. Checkpoint, talked with the NCO in charge and continued along our way. Approximately ½ a mile beyond the checkpoint, my squad was divided on both sides of the road with me in front, a tractor/ small truck type vehicle approached from our rear. As it moved pass each of my soldiers, they began to yell for the driver to stop. I did not understand what was going on, but I also knew not to question my team leaders (they were good, and made me look good). I raised my rifle at the driver just as he was passing by me. Luckily he saw it and slammed on the brakes. As the rear of the truck came into my view, I thanked God that he did not stop so abruptly that his sensitive cargo fell to the ground. In the cargo bed of the vehicle were to 105mm artillery rounds, both with fuses still attached. Of course this was the one mission that my unit did not authorize an interpreter, so there I was, stuck on the side of a mountain with a poor farmer, 2 Unexploded Ordinances (UXO), no interpreter, and I was about to find out that it could still get worse. We pulled the driver from the vehicle and talked to him in broken French. Luckily, he was well known in the area for being very Pro-America, so we did not think of him as a threat. He told us that he found the rounds on his land and was headed to take them to a scrap metal vendor. I sent two of my soldiers to the far side of the vehicle to cordon off the road. I

Today, we use a common standard of time in our day-to-day lives. Sixty minutes in an hour, twenty-four hours in a day, three hundred sixty-five days in a solar year; but time has always been used to measure and record important events. This has never been more evident as it has been in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In this era of human history, punctuality is one of the key elements of our workforce, and particularly in the military.…

Punctuality is a very important thing in life. Getting to work on time when you are supposed to, is punctuality. Showing up for a meeting on time is punctuality. Showing up for an appointment on time is punctuality. It is very important to make it on time for work, meetings, formations (ten minutes prior), and appointments. Appointments in this case, are very important to make it to on time. It is best to show up for appointments early. If you leave home early to get to your appointment, it is much less likely you will be held up and become late by traffic or any accidents you may come upon as you drive to your appointment. Missing appointments lets several people down. There are people expecting to see you, you are letting them down. There are people that need to be seen by the people you made an appointment with, you are letting them down by taking up valuable time from a dentist, doctor, optometrist, etc. when they could be there instead of you and having things they need taken care of. In the military, not showing up for an appointment is also letting down your squad leader, your unit, and the whole military organization. It can cost the Army a lot of money to schedule an appointment for you and then have you not show up for it. By missing an appointment, you also show that you lack discipline and responsibility. It does not look good to your leaders and makes it seem like you can not be trusted with simple tasks. Punctuality is a big part of impression and it is very important to make a good impression. When you lack punctuality, it sets a bad example to others, friends, family, as well as other soldiers. If you were not taught in civilian life or learned through having a job, in basic combat training in the military you are certainly taught to show up early and be on time for formations and that should carry over to other aspects of your life, such as appointments. Missing appointments takes away from everyone's very valuable time. There is not excuse for…

Punctuality shows that you are responsible, trustworthy and can follow directions. Punctuality isn't just an order that the Army requires, but also a good personal trait that is a reflection of a person’s character, it shows that you have personal integrity and self-discipline. While some of us are occasionally late due to circumstances beyond our control, habitual tardiness shows a lack of respect for other people and their time. If someone is late continually that shows that they more then likely do not care about what their NCO tells them. Time is a precious gem that should not be wasted at any cost. If you don't use your time wisely, you can never get it back. It is a very special resource in that you cannot store it or save it for later. Promptness is not only a duty, but is also a part of good manners, it is favorable to fortune, reputation, influence, and usefulness. Lack of punctuality is a theft of someone else's time and a complete lack of respect for others. You should be punctual in everything you do. Punctuality goes hand in hand with military discipline. Recruits are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from the day one of boot camp. Military discipline and effectiveness is built on the foundation of obedience to orders. This is why we are supposed work so well as a team. By following orders from the more…

Like most children, I used to think that I had a lot of time on my hands. Nevertheless, as I grew older and entered middle school, I realized how time is extremely limited and must be used wisely. As a result, I have learned how to be punctual, from handing assignments to arriving at a designated location. Punctuality shows an evidence of preparedness which can be applied to many aspects of one’s life. Because a majority of my assignments have an assigned due date, I am strongly encouraged to hand it in before or on the deadline, a point that all teachers emphasize, whether it’s classwork or homework. To ensure that I hand in my best work, I prefer beginning my assignments early in order to have time to revise and improve my work. Arriving on time is important as well. As a student, I am expected of me to arrive at school every day at 8 am sharp in order to receive maximum instructional time. However, I tend to leave my house early to prepare for any mishaps during my journey to the school or any other destination. Aside from school, arriving to work or an important meeting, such as an interview, is important as well. Lateness is generally associated with resistance, lack of respect and consideration, hence why many people regard time as an important component to one’s first impression. If admitted into the program at the GESC, I will try my best to be on time, although the commute time is approximately two hours, because I believe that punctuality is one of the keys to…
