Why Is Joaquim Chissano?
“CRISIS OF JAUQUIM ALBERTO CHISSANO”
Every country rises and falls on leadership. Practically, leadership is the moving force of any economy or booming institution in the world. The world fortunately is gifted with leaders who have caused positive impacts and have moved collapsed nations to formidable giants. Amongst these leaders is Joaquim Chissano. A man known for his rare talents in persuasion and negotiation, and celebrated for his ability to turn a war-torn country into a haven.
Born from a humble beginning in 1939 in a small town of Malehice, in Mozambique. Chissano grew out of abject poverty gradually to become the redemption of the country. A leader who with a formidable team took Mozambique out of the hands of colonial masters and

However, in 1994, he legitimately became the second president of Mozambique through an election he conducted. In this period, Mozambique was experiencing a civil war which had lasted for slightly over ten years and tensions had risen. The Federation Liberation Movement (FRELIMO), a belligerent in the war was strongly opposed by an anti-communist organisation at the time. Mozambique had lost millions of people in the war and had most of its citizens displaced. For any leader who is faced with such a situation, the urge to shed responsibility lingers, but not Chissano. In 1992, during his reign as president, Chissano was able to convince his strong opposition to sign a peace treaty to bring the war to an amicable end. (Dava, Chigora, & Tawanda, …show more content…
He knew Mozambique had just retired from war, and the issue of peace was crucial to the citizenry at the time. In his own wisdom, he introduced a meditation technique and encouraged his colleagues and later a deal of the populace to meditate twice daily. This resulted in internal peace of the majority, which in effect led “to peace and balance”, as testified by Chissano.
Having been criticized for his formidable friendship with the president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, Chissano has been able to prove himself as a noble man who respects institutions. Even though the Mozambican constitution made him eligible for the presidency for an extra term. He took a decision to step down and give his colleagues an opportunity to lead. He indeed understood that strong institutions are crucially needed more than strong men.
Also, after his tenure as a president, he continues to engage with his environment and the world at large. Chissano has assumed various roles in the United Nations over the years and has played an impactful role in the campaign for peace. He uses his skills in conflict resolution to help African countries in a similar situation as Mozambique a few year ago. An example is the instrumental role he played in aiding to solve the conflict in southern Sudan. (United Nations Security Council,

    First Battle of Mogadishu

The First battle of Mogadishu took place in 1993 as a result of increased tension over the conquest to create ‘Greater Somalia’ that led up to the battle. These tensions were escalated by the ensuing power struggles that were happening in Somalia between the existing rebel groups of Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF), Somali Patriotic Movement (SPM) and Somali Democratic Movement (SDM) and the United Somali Congress (USC) which later divided into two groups. Then increasing loss of life prompted foreign intervention under Operation Restore Hope, however when the foreign intervention turned militant it led to the battle between the forces of United States supported by United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM II) and the Somalian militiamen and the armed civilians led by the then self proclaimed president of Somalia mohammed farrah aideed (). The ideal that there could have been any measures put in place to ensure that this could have been avoided is difficult to ascertain. This is because since the creation of the United Nations in 1945, over 100 major conflicts around the world have left 20 million dead, because the United Nations was unable to ensure peace due to lack of resources(). However according to Agenda for Peace by Boutros Ghali there are certain measures that could have been taken by the United Nations to either reduce the effects of conflict or contain conflict or eradicate the possibility of conflict altogether, namely peace-keeping, peace-making, peace-building and preventive diplomacy (). Furthermore he stated that although the sovereignty of a state must be maintained, it must be completely taken into regard because ‘its theory never matched reality’ and states need some kind of external guidance to function efficiently ().…

In every scene of a country’s life, there has always been a leader at the forefront of it all. Many countries have flourished under the good leaders while they have been destroyed by the bad ones. However, the question that begs to be asked is what is a leader and where are they usually found? According to John C. Maxwell, a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. Leaders know the way and since they know the way, they would have to test it out and when that particular method has been proven and tested, they would show the way to their followers. Leadership is not only found in the governing bodies of a country; they are also found within the church. Each church must have a pastor who leads the church.…

Some fantastic progress has been made across Africa. Last year, the annual Ibrahim Index of African governance produced by my own Mo Ibrahim Foundation showed that governance had improved in two-thirds of African countries. Another core initiative of the Foundation is the Ibrahim Prize for excellence in leadership in Africa. We award over $7m to former executive heads of state or government who have demonstrated their commitment to advancing their countries and improving the quality of life for their citizens, while at the same time avoiding corruption and stepping down when they should. We have now awarded the prize twice, first to Joaquim Chissano, former President of Mozambique, and then to Festus Mogae, former President of Botswana. If we look at these two along with men like Kofi Annan and Nelson Mandela, we can see the calibre of leadership that Africa is capable of producing.…
