I am interested in pursing the major I chose above because I have developed a passion for medicine through my own health obstacles. I suffer from Chronic Migraines, which has caused me to spend a great deal of my life in doctor's offices. Positive experiences with my doctors lead to me idolizing them as a young child; so much so that I memorized the every bone in the body at the age of five. This passion stayed alive and well as I grew older, however my admiration began to transition from the doctors themselves to the subject. This all stemmed from my own health; I wanted to know exactly what was happening with my body and why. Now, I want to dedicate my life to the subject and possibly be the doctor that inspires someone to discover their…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

When studying this course, I was introduced to the health sector for the first time and it was during this time that I saw how important the health sector really is. I studied units such as Developing Effective Communication and Development Through the Life Stages and these units, as well as others, have taught me the qualities required to care and look after individuals. One unit in particular was Vocational Experience; in this unit I completed two work experience placements. My first placement was at a care home for the elderly and my second placement was at a PACE Centre; a school for children with various physical and mental disabilities. These placements have demonstrated a glimpse of what it takes to look after individuals with needs and shown me skills that are vital in the health care industry. Studying a Level 3 BTEC course has also helped me to learn invaluable skills such as meeting deadlines and organisation skills as well as working well in a team. I hope to develop these skills further when studying a university course. In summary, I must say that I really enjoyed studying Health and Social Care as I knew this was the first step for me to achieve my dream of becoming a…

My journey starts when I leave Puebla, Mexico eight years ago without knowing a single word in English to being a first generation college student in the United States. My family consists of my mother, two older sisters, my twin brother, and left behind my alcoholic, abusive father. I have been working in the hospitality industry ever since I arrived, from being a dishwasher to becoming front of the house supervisor. Initially without English knowledge or particular skills I had to settle into working in the lowest paid and grueling position in a restaurant, dishwasher. I was able to move up the ladder by taking night English as a Second Language class at City College of San Francisco and working up to ten hours a day every day. Every semester I took ESL classes, went hand in hand with promotions at work or better employment opportunities, to all the way to becoming supervisor of the restaurant. For this reason, I found in education an exit to poverty and a path to mind enrichment.. My proudest achievements are getting a GED, obtaining a high school diploma after completing the transitional studies program and now a 4.0 GPA in my first semester of credit classes, which I took to transfer to a four year university.…

As a bird builds through changing seasons, I too have prepared for the study of medicine through variously themed ¡°seasons¡± in my life. During high school, for example, I focused my activities on serving the various communities of which I am a part. After joining Mt. Olivet SDA Church, I became involved with the community of Williamsville, New York -- participating in an anti-drug rally and health fair, leading local public speaking events, singing in church choirs at nursing homes, and visiting hospitalized church members. I was also a mentor and counselor for underprivileged children at the Buffalo Reading Recreational Center leading group meetings to the museum and the park. For me, chemistry is the paramount scientific subject, one which explains the visible aspects of science. It underpins the theory of my biological studies and even though I find physics an interesting subject; I find the ideas intangible in comparison to the knowledge of the chemistry you can see. Studying chemistry at A-Level has been extremely beneficial to my scientific knowledge, especially alongside biology and maths A-Levels; the problem-solving and calculating skills that I have developed from studying A-Level maths will help with not only the mathematics module in the first year of this course, but my ability to analyse quantitatively and interpret graphs and results will also support the chemistry degree as a whole. My biology A-level has also shown me the applications of chemistry and supported my learning in modules such as the ‘Thread of Life’ module, one of my most favourable modules of the chemistry course, and something I am looking forward…

Many people in present time believe that science is something that is not necessary to learn. I believe that science is something that everyone should know of.
