Why I Want To Play Basketball
"Apurva! Hurry up, let's go, stop playing around!" After Sunday school it was customary for the youth group to do community service together, however I never really liked to participate, instead I preferred to play basketball. While everyone was assigned a specific task on a weekly basis, I was never the person who cared about what I did. They would call me from where they were working, to get my attention. I heard them and chose to ignore them, because I figured that playing basketball would be more fun. However, It had never occurred to me that maybe I was not doing what I needed to do as someone my age or was not as involved as my peers. This changed when one of my friends approached me and told me that if I love to play sports, and I’m good with the younger teens. Which gave me an idea to start organizing youth sport …show more content…
I was starting to regret that I said yes. Part of brain was telling me that I should go play basketball with my friends, while the other was telling me this was an opportunity to act more mature. When I started to get all the kids organized, I started getting less nervous. The thought of playing with my friends left my mind. Seeing the kids laughing and enjoying the sports made me not regret the decision to organize the activities. I really started to be fond of organizing sports and getting to know the kids. Encouraged by my decision and wanting more responsibilities, I talked to an elder and asked if I could be the leader of sunday school for middle school aged students. I got the call. I was going to lead the class. When I walked in the first day all the kids were excited to see me. I asked myself, “Why had I not done this before?” I liked spending time doing what I wanted to do, but that seemed like an old life now. Volunteering and leading those younger than me changed me. Even my friends and family started to

An important basketball player once said, “Never say never because limits, like fears, often are an illusion.” Michael Jordan was saying that you can run from those illusions or you can challenge them. When I was in 6th grade, an important person told me that I should join Sunfish Swimming. I wasn’t really sure what to make of that and laughed it off. A week later, I was told that there would be a swim meet and that I should go and see if it would be something I was interested in. So I agreed, just to see what it would be like. We drove to Fargo and watched the swim meet. When I came back I was not sure if I would be able to handle it and be under that kind of pressure. But they talked me into it, and I said yes to swimming a few days…

I had joined my church youth choir and loved every moment of it. Then, once middle school came I decided I wanted to continue my music education by joining the band playing the trombone. The next year I decided to try out for the middle school field hockey team and made it. I continued with band and field hockey until my freshman year of high school when I had the intentions of quitting field hockey in order to pursue marching band because no one had ever done both before. I soon came to my senses and decided that not only was I going to continue with both band and field hockey, but I was also going to be the first person to successfully do that. On top of this, I decided I would audition for the school musical and jazz ensemble which would also overlap with the end of the marching band and field hockey seasons. Through much communication with my coaches and band directors, and musical directors I was able to accomplish this for all four years of my high school career and I wouldn't have had it any other…

Life is comprised of a series of learning profound learning experiences. On that stands out occurred last year in seventh grade. Two friends and I decided we wanted to try something new, to learn how to play basketball! We made that decision mainly because we wanted to do an activity together for the winter term, and seventh graders didn't have the option of doing the winter school play. We were very hesitant; only one of us had any experience playing basketball, and we didn't think it would be very fun to run up and down a court trying to get a ball in a hoop. Still we kept an open mind and began to learn how to play.…

One extremely important activity outside of the classroom that has helped me grow as an individual is Church League basketball at my local YMCA. From the outside looking in this league seems to be a form of glorified pick-up basketball with referees and a scoreboard but there is so much more to it. Almost half way through my junior year my father convinced me to try out for the varsity basketball team at school in November to which I hesitated at first but later gave in and tried out only to be cut. At first I was upset because I had never been cut from a team and I was unsure of how to handle it and what to do with my free time. This prompted me to reach out to God and ask him for a sense of direction and purpose in this time of my life to which He responded with a friend inviting me to Church League basketball. Once I experienced a few scrimmages and practices I decided to commit to playing Church League and coming to all of the…

Recently I have had the opportunity to volunteer with an organization called, “Upper Level Basketball”. It is a program through First Baptist Church in Hot Springs Arkansas that offers a basketball league to boys and girls with various developmental disabilities and special needs. Prior to volunteering I had no idea what this opportunity would entail, and quite frankly I felt underqualified for the job at hand. At that time I was struggling emotionally and wondering of my purpose in life, so when this opportunity to volunteer presented itself I thought it would be a good way to shift my focus from myself onto others. The first night of volunteering I was nervous because I had virtually no experience communicating with children who have special needs, as well as very little basketball experience. Upon arriving I was told…

One activity that I do participate in is basketball, my family always suggests me to do a sport during the summer so I can get some exercise. Exercising during the summer is a good idea, usually during the summer people tend to gain weight. This seems to be like a good plan because if you gain weight, you can alsl lose weight by doing sports. It can also get all your energy out, like if you are mad in some way or if you just feel really energized. Doing anything like basketball, or other sports can be enjoyable, you do not always have to win as long as you are having fun.…

Since I was 7 years old, basketball has played an integral part of my life. I have devoted countless hours to not just a sport, but a passion, an outlet; to the game that I love. When I arrived at Bow Middle School as a fifth grader, my classmates and I would always look up to the 7th and 8th grade middle school basketball teams. Every year during winter carnival, the boys and girls teams would play a game in front of the entire school. Playing in that game became a dream and a goal of mine, but first I would need to make the team. For three years I developed my basketball skills, using my passion for the sport and desire to play in that game as motivation. When tryouts for basketball in 8th grade drew near, I knew I was ready. However a new coach would be at the helm this year. Our new basketball coach was also a coach for the youth football program. This resulted in numerous football…

I believe drugs can kill, but basketball will save me. I am a young adult, a teenager, a young man who has witnessed close family members deceased due to the presence of drugs. As I witness this, the game of basketball keeps me safe. I was born into a family, a loving caring family, one who did not think they were doing anything wrong because it was not around me. Soon enough I came to realize they would no longer be around me.…

At the Providence Family Support Center I volunteered an hour and a half of my time with 7 other girls. We spend our time there brightening the children’s day. Some played kickball, some colored, some built forts, and some played games. I played with two boys approximately 2-3 years old. They loved trying to play basketball but once they were about 3 baskets in and didn’t make one they began to become frustrated. I spoke to them in a calming, encouraging voice and helped them calm down. After that I helped them by using encouraging words as they start making the baskets with my help by lifting them up one by one and letting them throw the ball into the hoop. They became happy and were…

I have been in sports since a young age and sports have been part of my family forever. As of now, I am a Grace University woman’s soccer player and have been for the past two years. Soccer pushes you past your comfort level physically, and mentally. It also takes up majority of my time throughout the year. Growing up, my dad pushed me to be a better athlete in each sport that I participated in. Being a part of sports team, helped me learn about the different types of people. In a small town, in Iowa, you don’t get much culture besides the hicks, farmers, or athletes. It was a different type of culture compared to Wisconsin, where I lived before sixth grade. My grade was very clique-ish. We didn’t all get along and we didn’t all hang out. Majority of the people on my teams, I didn’t see outside of school. I would build my friendships based off of the sport that I was in. This wasn’t the best way for me to gain lasting friendships. It was completely unlike what I was used to in my small Christian school. I learned very quickly about having a “status” in a small-town due to the sports that I was in. This made me work harder and push myself farther so that I could get a spot on the court or field. Through sports, it helped me value the time that I had with friends, or the free time I would spend by myself. I learned how to be diligent with getting my work done before a game or practice. On the down side to competing in a sport…

In the 9th grade I was new to high school and was kind of scared with the new adjustments to school work, a new atmosphere, and so many distractions ahead of me. During the first quarter I had adjusted to the work load and stayed focus. One day my friends and I were talking about sports and it got me thinking about if I could manage school and sports. One of my friends suggested that I should try out for the junior varsity basketball team. Before high school the last time I played on a basketball team was in 4th grade, but it wasn’t organized.…

Though I had experienced several activities throughout the first ten years of my life, I had not selected the activities in which I participated. My parents were the ones who, up to that point, suggested different recreational pursuits. They recommended I play soccer, and when the season ended and I decided not to rejoin, my parents thought tennis may be more enjoyable. I took part in tennis and Girl Scouts for four years, but I did not wish to pursue them beyond that. Even though I enjoyed doing the activities my parents chose for me, and I learned principled lessons from them, I had not had the opportunity to choose something for myself. That changed one cold, dark Wednesday in the middle of winter at my religious education class. The director of the…
