Why I Chose Social Work Essay
I really should not have been surprised that I would finally choose Social Work as my major, I have been surrounded by social workers and their values for the majority of my life. While some of these have not been the most ideal role models, the ones who are really cut out for the job radiate passion. Both of my parents worked in helping professions. My dad was a special education teacher for those with behavioral problems and those who had intellectual disabilities. My mom worked at Bryce Hospital and then she transferred to W.D. Partlow Developmental Center. As a child I always swore up and down that I wanted to do something to help people. While the career and the ways I want to make people happy have changed one thing in all this time has not changed. The population I want to work with. Since I was a child I have always wanted to work with those who had some type of disability. Whether it be a physical disability, or an intellectual disability. I think this stems from my parents working in this career field and me being exposed to this population since birth. I remember other kids saying mean and hurtfull comments about the people at my moms work, and I would go home crying saying how it wasn’t fair for them to say those things and why are they so mean. My mom always told me they are mean and say those nasty things because they are scared of the unknown and different. My parents always stressed that my view point of the situation was always different than my peers. I also would like to help this population because I fall under this population. As a young child in elementary school, I struggled a lot with learning. While most of my peers excelled I seemed to be slowly dragging along. I hated going to school because I felt so dumb and
