Why is the Chain of Command Important The United States Army has a very distinct structure to maximize the efficiency of the command and control of soldiers, this structure is called the Chain of Command. The rank structure was created in the 1700’s when the military became a structured element and when away from being a militia with no structure at all. Rank was established to officially appoint someone to give orders to soldiers; also to teach the newer enlisted soldiers respect. If there was no rank structure in the military there would be no organization or discipline in the army. The discipline and order that the United States ARMY has is what makes us the strongest army in the world. When a new recruit goes through basic training the rank structure and chain of command is constantly being drilled into their minds; as well as how to properly utilize the chain. As a new private in basic some soldiers are appointed into student leadership positions to help them understand how hard it is to run a squad or platoon sized element and to show them how much harder it is without the proper use of the chain of command. The soldiers quickly learn that one person can be in charge of a platoon but it is very difficult to handle and control every single individual soldier and their issues. The student leaders learn that the military cannot efficiently function without the chain of command and the use of delegation. The army is based on the 2-5 rule; this is broken down for example the battery level you have the battery commander who is ultimately responsible for all of the soldiers in the battery. The battery commander has three soldiers directly under his guidance and control, the XO and

    There are many reasons why a soldier, (doesn't matter the rank) should obey orders from anyone above him or her in the chain of command. Sometimes its good to listen to people soldiers below you too because they maybe smarter at the task then you are. One reason is that the military is revolved around higher ranking soldiers leading the lower ranking soldiers, they’re more experienced in the military then I am and been deployed more than i have. If everyone in the military just did their own thing then we wouldn't be a successful army and then our country wouldn't be as strong as it is. Every higher up gives an order for a reason, we may not like the reason but in the end most of the orders and decisions will be smart ones i guarantee. We were taught as children to obey our higher-ups. Starting from our parents, teachers, managers, police officers and etc… So how does this relate to the military? Well, when a person enlists in the United States Military, active duty or reserve, they take the following oath, “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.” Right there you are making a promise to the United States Military. Before you or I even put on the uniform, you promise you’ll obey the orders of the President and the orders of the officers appointed over you. Military discipline and effectiveness is built on the foundation of obedience to orders. Brand new privates are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from day one of boot camp.     As it is well known in any of the military branches, the chain of command is of high importance. The chain of command is built of out a single soldier. Those single soldiers are made into a squad. Two to four of those squads put together a platoon. From there, three to five platoons makes for a company.     In this we have learned that complacency has no part in the Army and that the only thing to do is strive to excel in all ways as a group for the benefit of the people we serve which by definition makes us a profession. I think this and the shared experiences is what makes us as a profession stand apart because the trust between ourselves and that which the American people place in us. Another unique characteristics of the Army is the dual character of the Army in that on one side we are a profession and on the other we are a department.
