Who Moved My Cheese
After a long time now I read book and that was “Who moved my Cheese” by Spencer Johnson. I always heard that it’s a great book. Early in the morning I held this book in my hand to complete it. It took me only 2 hours to complete this 100 pages book and I must confess that it’s a very good book. It’s a small story that will make you think about your present situation.
This is the story of 2 mice – Sniff & Scurry and 2 persons – Hem& Haw, who are as tiny as mice and their search for cheese to survive in their world that is a maze. The mice were the guys who adapted themselves always to the changes around them and survived happily whereas the 2 persons weren’t so adaptable to the changes happening around them and faced difficulties. The story tells you what you are going to gain when you adapt yourself to the situations around you rather than to suffer at one place. The cheese in this story can be related to many things in your life like work, money, love, family, knowledge etc.
The writings on the wall of the maze made by Haw makes one easily understand how change affects one’s life. After reading each writings on the wall, we can’t do anything except smile to ourselves thinking about its obvious simplicity and straightforward nature. * Having Cheese Makes You Happy * If You Do Not Change, You Can Become Extinct * Smell The Cheese Often So You Know When It’s Getting Old * Movement In A New Direction Helps You Find New Cheese * The Quicker You Let Go Of The Old Cheese, The Sooner You Find New Cheese * It Is Safer To Search In The Maze Than Remain In A Cheeseless Situation * Noticing Small Changes Early Helps You Adapt To The Bigger Changes That Are To Come * Move With The Cheese And Enjoy It.
Simple but great message in book is that change is inevitable and we must accept it as it is to grow, to learn and be happy: * Change Happens – they keep moving the cheese * Anticipate change – get ready for the cheese to move

The book is known for its playful, circular pattern. A boy gives a cookie to a mouse. The mouse asks for a glass of milk. He then requests a straw (to drink the milk), a mirror (to avoid a milk mustache), nail scissors (to trim his hair), and a broom (to sweep up). Next he wants to take a nap, to have a story read to him, to draw a picture, and to hang the drawing on the refrigerator. Looking at the refrigerator makes him thirsty, so the mouse asks for a glass of milk. The circle is complete when he wants a cookie to go with it.…

Miroslav Holub's poem ‘The Door' focuses on embracing new perspectives and embracing change. The metaphor of opening the door suggests we open ourselves up. If we go outside (that is to say, beyond the familiar, the here and the now), we may see some magical things such as a ‘garden' or a ‘magic city'. It is also possible that we may see something confronting such as a fog – but that fog will clear. In other word, we will understand and be rewarded in due time. Although there may be something confronting outside such as ‘darkness ticking' or even more frightening, ‘nothing', we should still open the door, for ‘at least there will be a draught.' Which is to say, although change is confronting, it will always be rewarded in some way. The origin of the change is embracing change itself. The change was caused by someone stepping outside their comfort zone and looking ‘outside the door.' Miroslav Holub's short text is an argument for new perspectives, his message is don't fear…

Life is merely a journey. On a journey, an individual experiences a range of obstacles, either expected or unexpected, which shapes their life. Such obstacles initiate the process of change and transformation. Clearly, through a close study of the play ‘Away’ by Michael Gow, the poem ‘Whither will I Wander’ by William Shakespeare and the picture book ‘I had trouble in getting to Solla Sollew’ by Dr Seuss, the characters experience various degrees of change and transformation. Factors that impact on the degree a character changes and transforms include: support networks and the ability or inability to accept reality. Through the use of language and visual techniques, each composer conveys how each character faces a degree of change within their journey.…

Another reason why we should study this book in the Overcoming Obstacles unit, is we join Jimmy on the journey of overcoming these obstacles. We see how he deals with loss, how he copes with family life, and how he handles failure. Elton, the author of the book, uses various techniques to convey how he overcomes all these obstacles. He uses humour to give us a funny insight on the daily problems. Humour also makes us, as the reader, enjoy the book even more.…

They realized that the cheese would not last forever. When the cheese finally did disappear, Sniff and Scurry were ready and started on their journey to find new cheese. These two characters represent the people who accept change and are ready to change whenever the moments come. These people realize that change is always happening. Sniff and Scurry did find the cheese before anyone else did due to their quick judgment to look for new cheese. At the moment the cheese disappeared, Hem and Haw were both reacting similarly. Dr. Spencer Johnson wrote “The little people’s behavior was not very attractive or productive but it was understandable.” To me, this means that being mad about change is okay, even though it is not going to get you anywhere. Throughout the whole story, Hem never changed. He always believed that the cheese would be returned to Cheese Station C. He represents the people that will deny change every chance they get and will try to keep the old ways as much as possible. After some time, however, Haw did change. He learned that the cheese was not ever going to be in Cheese Station C again.…

What is change? As young adults, our understanding of the concept of change can be limited at times. It is when we are able to engage with texts that we are able to broaden our understanding that change encompasses. J.D Salinger’s novel ‘Catcher in the Rye’, J.C. Burke’s novel Tom Brennan and Gus Sant’s film ‘Good Will Hunting’ all employ similar concepts of change. We are able to connect with these concepts as they reflect changes happening in our own lives. This allows us to then develop a greater understanding of the concept of change.…

And can you go back to it?” In my eyes square one is about starting over. Not only that but it's about a new beginning, a second chance, both which sound appealing, but are also deceiving. Because just as I remembered the correct paths in the maze I continue to build my knowledge of life and which paths to avoid. It is also true that no one escapes life unscaved and without a few body slams or two. So no matter how many times a return to the start of my life that is a maze I will always remember the incorrect paths I took before and the pain they caused me.…
