Who Is Beowulf A Hero
A major focus of medieval literature was heroism. Often heroes were hedonistic characters who performed larger than life acts and then boasted about them. Beowulf was a son, a king, and a hero. He would protect and battle all kinds of monsters and dragons just to make sure he kept his people safe and happy. Beowulf, was a man with many different characteristic traits. He demonstrates certain characteristics of a hero because he had responsibility, respect, trustworthiness, generosity, strength, power, and courage. A hero is one who places himself or herself at great risk while performing acts of courage. He is recognized for his strengths and power of protecting his people. Beowulf is faced with three forces to fight, Grendel (a monster), …show more content…
It is not enough for a hero to save people but the hero must also have perseverance. Beowulf took the responsibility to protect the people of the Danes when Grendel haunted them for twelve winters. But when Grendel's mother came back for revenge on her son’s life, he had the perseverance to stay and to fight her off too. After he killed both monsters he was crowned king of the Danes. Beowulf knows his responsibility to the people because he said this, "I had a fixed purpose when I put to sea. As I sat in the boat with my band of men, I meant to perform to the uttermost what your people wanted or perish in the attempt, in the fiend's clutches. And I shall fulfil that purpose, prove myself with a proud deed or meet my death here in the mead-hall." ( Lines 632-638) I believe that Beowulf is a responsible hero because he knows that his people are depending on him, so he knows he has a duty to fulfill. Beowulf stayed and finished what he had started when he also had to kill Grendel’s mother when she came seeking vengeance. Not only is Beowulf responsible he also has many other heroic characteristic …show more content…
Everyone in the world knew of Beowulf and respected him. He was the brave hero who wouldn’t let anything stand in his way. King Hrothgar respects Beowulf because he came from Sweden to fight off the monster that was haunting them. Not only did he kill Grendel but he also killed his mother. After that all the Danes respected him. He was even crowned king and ruled for 50 years. Wiglaf also respects Beowulf, he spoke to him before joining him to fight the dragon, “Your deeds are famous, so stay resolute, my lord, defend your life now with the whole of your strength. I shall stand by you.” (Lines 2666-68) By the time Wiglaf joined Beowulf in the fight against the dragon Beowulf was already weak. Wiglaf respects Beowulf because he joined him knowing the dangers he was going to face fighting the terrifying dragon. Respect is not the only heroic characteristic Beowulf

Today heroes consist of superman, batman, Tom Cruises and Michael Jordans who are very different from Beowulf's time. Back then, heroes were kings and warriors who basically protected their people and country. The warriors were strong men who could physically make or prevent an attack in order to protect their country. The roles of the heroes have changed today, though people still aspire to be like them. Heroes today, just as in Beowulf's time, are made immortal by the written word. While in our day heroes do not literally fight Grendels or dragons, they figuratively fight these battles everyday. Beowulf fought Grendel for his own glory and it seems, more importantly, to make the lives…

Beowulf has many heroic characteristics. When Beowulf went to the Land Of Danes, he went to kill Grendel. He didn't do it for the fame or the power. He wanted to kill him to help the Geats. He felt as if it was right, he says “They had in remembrance my courage and might. Many had seen me come safe from the conflict.” He never expected anything from anybody after anything he would do.…

What makes a mythical hero? In the article of Joseph Campbell’s “ The hero with a thousand faces” heros go through trials and tribulation which make them into the hero they are meant to be. The author of Beowulf is unknown. Beowulf is a hero, but doesn’t follow Campbell’s theory. Beowulf was a noble man when he fought Grendel he used his bare hands so it would be a fair fight and he would fight for fame. He wanted all people to like him. Campbell always has a love intrest and beowulf doesn’t. Campbell’s fights for women not fame. Both are heros but in different ways. A hero always goes through obsticals which puts them in the path of their adventure. For example when the sun goddess hides from fear she went through obsticals but she still was…

Risking your own well-being, comfort and security to help someone, whether it would be a community or someone individually, is known and defined as a hero in today’s society. Anyone can be seen as a hero in present day’s society if they are willing to make sacrifices for others in which they are presented as caring and selfless. Would Beowulf still be considered a hero today? Many would say no, but I would disagree because Beowulf has many attributes that American Soldiers have as well. They do things that people don’t even dream about it since it will put their own lives at risk. The main similarity between a Soldier and Beowulf is their passion of risking their own lives, to save anyone else's life.…

If a person does not risk death for their society, they will not be considered a hero; one will be considered as just an ordinary person. However, Beowulf proves that he is not just an ordinary person when he performs brave deeds and is faced with death on numerous accounts for the good of his people. Beowulf faces Grendel, a man-eating monster; Grendel’s mother, a water witch; and the dragon, a hot breath and poisonous creature. When Beowulf faces Grendel’s mother in lines 620-623 “And in an instant she had him down, held helpless. / Squatting with her weight on his stomach, she drew / A dagger, brown with dried blood and prepared / To avenge her only son” he sees death right before him. He keeps fighting because in lines 683-684 Beowulf says “No man but me / Could hope to defeat this monster”. When Beowulf faced the dragon in lines 718-722 “The monster came quickly toward him, / Pouring out fire and smoke, hurrying / To its fate. Flames beat at the iron / Shield, and for a time it held, protected / Beowulf as he’d planned; then it began to melt” Beowulf’s life flashes before his eyes again when he realizing that the shield is not going to hold up, and he will die from the dragon. Beowulf upholds the ideals of the Anglo-Saxon society; courage, loyalty, and honor throughout the entire literature of…

Heroes did what they did for recognition. Beowulf did not travel all that way to merely risk his life out of the goodness of his heart. Not only is today’s definition of hero far different, it is thrown around too much. Anyone who potentially puts himself in harm’s way is called a hero, like a soldier who is deployed, but never performs an act of courage. In actuality, true heroes value others over themselves, and show that by deeds of sacrifice. A hero risks life and limb to help another survive. When one looks at the tragic events of 9/11 everybody was trying to flee the buildings, down the stairs. The heroes were the ones who went up, knowing that they might not even be coming back down. There is a story of the “man in the red bandana,” an office worker who used to a be a volunteer firefighter. While everyone was fleeing downwards he went up and helped about a dozen people to safety. Sadly, his life was lost that day but he knew that was a possibility when he chose to go up. His moral compass sent him…

Foster explains how in order to keep the plot flowing people must die instead of the hero. “The plot needs something to happen in order to move forward, so someone must be sacrificed. That ‘someone’ is rarely the protagonist” (Foster 84). This quote shows how someone must be sacrificed in order to continue the plot. In Beowulf there is a good example of this. When Aeschere is killed Beowulf says, “Tis better for a man to avenge his friends death than to spend his days lamenting.” This quote leads to Beowulf’s next quest, which is to kill Grendel’s mother. Without the death of Aeschere the plot would be stuck with no flow to Beowulf’s next quest. This shows how Beowulf can be classified as a hero in literature. Lastly, Beowulf is a hero because he was never afraid to die for the purpose of his quest, multiple times he said he was either to die or achieve his…

Starting with his introductory boast, Beowulf states that he “swam in the blackness of night, hunting monsters out of the ocean, and killing them one by one; death was my errand and the fate they had earned.” Every time he destroyed the enemy, he became someone that was admirable and honorable to his home people and to his king. He also believes that his “lord Higlac might think less of me if I let my sword go where my feet were afraid to, if I hid behind some broaden linden shield: my hands alone shall fight for me, struggle for life against the monster,” which shows that he’d rather have the risk of dying than have the amour that might save his life in order to maintain honor with his king.…

    Hero and Beowulf

The hero is an age-old concept that describes someone that will defend their honor to the end. In Beowulf, the author portrays the warrior Beowulf and his three battles in such a way as to clearly define what it means to be a hero. Fred Robinson and J. R. R. Tolkien addressed heroism in Beowulf regarding the warrior’s traits, as well as his battles and burial. The author of Beowulf defines the hero through Beowulf’s three battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. In this poem, each monster possesses a specific quality undesired by heroes. Beowulf battles anger/jealousy, vengeance, and greed/selfishness for the good of his Geat nation. As Beowulf fends off these anti-hero traits, he becomes capable of being a great leader of the Geats due to his divine piety – ultimately allowing him to be deified during his two burial ceremonies. Therefore, in Beowulf, the hero must utilize divine piety to overcome greed, vengeance, and jealousy in order to protect his nation.…

This essay is the comparison between Beowulf and the modern day hero. All soldiers that are fighting for my country certainly comes to mind first, when I think about a modern day hero. Both hero’s are fighting for a good cause, get rewarded for what they do, and get treated with much respect. Although a soldier might not withhold unworldly strength as one such as Beowulf, they both are putting their life at stake, which gives them both the title as being a hero.…

The Norse heroic code kept people focused in rewards in their life. The heroic code values such attributes as strength, courage and honor. The heroic code was of great importance in warrior societies. In Beowulf, a hero had to be willing to face any odds, and fight to the death of their glory and people. In the story, Beowulf is a considered a hero. "They said that all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame". This showed us that everybody considered him a hero because of how he defeated all the bad people. He is considered a hero because he has the following traits; courage, loyalty, faith and for his inhuman strengths. Beowulf shows courage because he never thought twice about fighting, he would kill those who came for him. An example is when he defeated Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon. Beowulf never thought about the fights he would just fight his hardest so he could defeat them. He was also considered a hero because of his loyalty.
