Beowulf and Modern Day Hero

World Literature
16 July 2009 This essay is the comparison between Beowulf and the modern day hero. All soldiers that are fighting for my country certainly comes to mind first, when I think about a modern day hero. Both hero’s are fighting for a good cause, get rewarded for what they do, and get treated with much respect. Although a soldier might not withhold unworldly strength as one such as Beowulf, they both are putting their life at stake, which gives them both the title as being a hero. Both the U.S soldier and Beowulf portray characteristics of a hero. Courage, bravery, and selflessness all play a huge role in their lives. Although one is past and the other present, hero is the only word that comes to mind. They are standing up for what is right, and putting their life on the line at the same time. Running away would be the easy thing to do, but not for a hero. It seems as if the word hero is thrown out into our everyday vocabulary. Almost as if someone everyday becomes a hero. Hitting a homerun, Scoring the winning touchdown, or taking down your high school prom queen does not deserve recognition as a hero. It’s not something that happens merely overnight.
The first comparison is how they are fighting for a good cause. Beowulf is challenged when he receives word from Hrothgar that a monster has come to mead hall and is destroying all his men. I’m sure he was at least scared a little bit. If I heard of a monster that was eating all sort of human beings, there is no way you would ever find me anywhere close to that place. He goes on to defeat not only one monster, but three. The soldiers are doing basically the same. Fighting the enemy, promoting morality, and to stop the suffering of innocent people. They are also trying to promote peace amongst a country that is constantly harassed by the Taliban, which could be considered the modern day monster. In addition, both hero’s are involved in many difficult tasks. They

The hero is an age-old concept that describes someone that will defend their honor to the end. In Beowulf, the author portrays the warrior Beowulf and his three battles in such a way as to clearly define what it means to be a hero. Fred Robinson and J. R. R. Tolkien addressed heroism in Beowulf regarding the warrior’s traits, as well as his battles and burial. The author of Beowulf defines the hero through Beowulf’s three battles with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the dragon. In this poem, each monster possesses a specific quality undesired by heroes. Beowulf battles anger/jealousy, vengeance, and greed/selfishness for the good of his Geat nation. As Beowulf fends off these anti-hero traits, he becomes capable of being a great leader of the Geats due to his divine piety – ultimately allowing him to be deified during his two burial ceremonies. Therefore, in Beowulf, the hero must utilize divine piety to overcome greed, vengeance, and jealousy in order to protect his nation.…

Have you ever wondered where the concept of creation of the epic hero cycle originated from? For over centuries, the old super hero vs. evil villain story has been told over and over again, and it all started with the Anglo-Saxons' story of Beowulf. The archetype for all epic hero cycle stories. Various stories evolved from Beowulf, which contain the same concept, but changing the characters, setting, and etc. Beowulf displays heroic character traits, as well as many other heroes today. For example, one epic hero that possesses heroic qualities is Harry Potter. In my opinion, Harry Potter would be a hero in our society today. Not so much for his physical capabilities, but because he is reluctant to recognize the role that is chosen for him. Both heroes are strikingly similar, and yet they are remarkably different at the same time; Harry has no desire to fight off evil, but when he is called upon,…

Search for “epic hero” in the dictionary, and the definition reads: “a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events” (“epic hero”). Scan the page a little further, preferably just underneath it, and the name Beowulf appears. Beowulf has come to be the embodiment of an epic hero in society for his ability to exhibit not only one, but all traits of a hero in the epic proportion. Although Beowulf’s story remains evident, the relevance of his heroic characteristics may be questionable. Nonetheless, many traits that were valued at the time when Beowulf swam the seas, continue to linger on in modern society. “A hero is someone who is willing to stand up, sacrifice, volunteer, and unbiasedly protect the best interests of his or her cause…” (Heidi Boutler). Beowulf is a novel about a man whose is looked upon as a hero and is fearless of anything. He fights to the death against his enemy to protect the people around him and tackles all challenges that come his way. A theme that can be very easily recognized throughout the novel is in order to be a hero one must put others’ lives before their own without a second thought. They must be strong, mighty, and a great thinker. Following that theme, another one that is very prominent is loyalty. There are many parts of the story that make these themes distinctly stand out.…
