Analysis of Whistle Blowing in Nursing
Introduction
The concept of whistle blowing has become increasingly prevalent in society, especially as it relates to persons within professional organizations. There have been numerous examples of whistle blowing reported by the media. This has resulted in an increased awareness by the public in the concept. However, despite the increased use of the term in the media and increased public awareness, many are not aware of what exactly is meant by whistle blowing, why it is used and what the consequences may be for the whistle blower. Finally, the legal duty to whistle blow may arise in certain situations. In Ontario, a nurse has a duty under Section 72 of the Child and Family Services Act to promptly report any suspicions that a child is or may be in need of protection to a children’s aid society (CAS). The Act defines the phrase “child in need of protection” and explains what must be reported to a CAS. Firstly, I will need to properly assess the situation and consider my own preparedness to go forward with disclosure. This will include carefully working out a plan and exploring all available avenues before taking action. At this juncture, I would certainly raise my concerns with the offending party in an attempt to change their behaviour.
If my colleague ultimately does not change their behaviour, I would then move to documenting everything and start collecting the evidence needed to support the position I am ultimately going to take. I will need to ensure that I clarify my goal for disclosing information to the public. This may include finding those within the same organization who share my goal in common and building necessary alliances.
Once I am prepared with my supporting documents I would then start moving up the chain of command within the organization. This would include honouring any steps that I am required to take pursuant to my employment contract or collective bargaining
