Also, when teens get insufficient sleep, they are more likely to smoke, become alcoholics, do drugs, and get into fights at school, which has caused many students to become criminals in the future. If you do not get enough sleep each night, you could suffer from drowsy driving, which is extremely dangerous, and could lead to many deaths due to car crashes. In Wyoming, when Jackson Hole High School shifted its start time almost to 9:00 a.m., the car crashes involving teenage drivers dropped by an astonishing 70%. Later school times allow you to get the sleep that you need to make good decisions, not only for you, but also for…

In the article “Our kids need more sleep” Written by Valerie Erde, she makes many good points about why school should be set back to a later time. First is how it increases academic alertness and vigilance. Second, is how a later start time decreases depression in teens and decreases tardiness and decreases truancy. Last, is how this later start time is actually helping the students get better grades. I one hundred percent agree with this and believe these policies should definitely be implemented.…

“42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

One reason schools should start later is because of the importance of how students could more effortlessly become involved with school. By starting school later, it would allow students to score higher in their core classes because students are able to get more sleep, which results in increased performances (Wahlstrom 10). To further support this, Wahlstrom mentions in a study done in multiple different high schools, “Statistically significant increases in the 1st period grade point average in one or more core courses of English, math, social studies, and science with start times from 8:00-8:30 [in the morning]” (11). She then continues with, “Significant increases in grade point average in all 1st-period core courses for all semesters in all grades in Jackson Hole High School in Wyoming, with a start time of 8:55 [in the morning]” (11). This…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…

High schools throughout the United States start their school day at times that are too early for students. Teenagers have a biological wake time, and when schools start early in the morning, it interferes with teens biological clock. According to a study done by Harvard Medical School, young adults need at least nine hours of sleep every night. The study also shows that the need for sleep is never greater in our lives than it is during adolescence, but yet the conflict between school and sleep is at it’s highest while teens are in high school. One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this…

For instance, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), “middle and high school should start no earlier than 8:30 a.m.” (MacMillan) because it will affect a student's health, safety, and academic performance. This means that schools should initiate the starting time for school hours to 8:30 a.m. for students who are prone to staying up late or waking up late for school. It will benefit the teenager's life by allowing the children and teenagers a full-night sleep instead of a 6-hour “sleep.” In addition, AASM is the first group to officially taken over the position of the subject of starting school no later than 8:30 a.m. A group of scientist and health experts with over 10,000 members are determined to inform schools to start around 8:30 a.m. They suggest that later school starts can benefit adolescents and teens, who scientists say are wired to stay up late and sleep in. In sum, a bountiful of groups of groups is now trying to discuss the topic of starting school at a later…

Every year, adolescents are resigned to another year of fighting against their biological clock and are unable to get to class on time. The teen later gets up, the better off he is at school. This is the conclusion reached by several investigations in different parts of the world, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom, and based on this evidence the US Academy of Pediatrics. It has just recommended that all schools in that country have students between 10 and 18 years of age to delay the entry time until 08.30 a.m. or later. The latest research on the subject, conducted by the University of Minnesota, highlights the benefits of changing the schedule, after research in US. Which spanned eight schools and gathered data from more than 9,000 students. This study found that teens who enter school later report higher grades, doing better on tests. They also showed evidence of less depression and use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. But in addition, the research noted that there are fewer car accidents involving teenagers, because teenagers are usually more alert.…
