Persuasive Essay: Should School Start Times Be Later?
Over 20% of Americans suffer from sleep loss and more than 1,500 deaths a year are caused by drivers that have fallen asleep at the wheel. One way these two frightening statistics could be lowered is by simply changing school start times. Students need more sleep than what they are getting due to early school start times, which is getting sleepy drivers on the road. School start times should be later than they are now because middle school and high school students are “programmed” to sleep in, sleep improves grades and it also improves physical health. One reason school start times should be later than they are now is because junior high and high school students are “programmed” to stay up late and sleep in. During teenage years, students bodies are designed to stay up later and sleep in. Both When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare, an article written by Scholastic, and the National Sleep Foundation website agree with just that! Nancy Shute, an award-winning science journalist, stated on npr.com “...it’s difficult, if not impossible, for them to fall asleep before 10:30.” If students fall asleep at 10:30 pm and get the recommended amount of rest, which is 9 ½ hours, students should not wake up until 7:00 am. Some schools have already started class at this …show more content…
For example, Minnesota Public Schools pushed back their start time by 85 minutes and the amount the students grade’s raised were very encouraging, according to the National Sleep Foundation. This study proves that getting enough rest really can make students smarter! In class, if a student has had enough rest it’s proven that students are more awake, alert and ready to learn. As a result, the students earn better grades. “Sleep makes you smarter and more creative over a longer term…” says Scholastic in the article, When Sleep Becomes A Nightmare. Just pushing back the school start times by one hour could improve the grades for students and the

Teens that do not get enough sleep are much more likely to participate in violent crimes as well as property crimes than teens with good amounts of sleep. Also, when teens get insufficient sleep, they are more likely to smoke, become alcoholics, do drugs, and get into fights at school, which has caused many students to become criminals in the future. If you do not get enough sleep each night, you could suffer from drowsy driving, which is extremely dangerous, and could lead to many deaths due to car crashes. In Wyoming, when Jackson Hole High School shifted its start time almost to 9:00 a.m., the car crashes involving teenage drivers dropped by an astonishing 70%. Later school times allow you to get the sleep that you need to make good decisions, not only for you, but also for…

Studies have shown that students on the later start time “ had better grades than students that started with a 7:15 a.m. start time”(Erde) This right here seals the deal and should automatically prove that we need to have these times in place and we need them quick for the betterment of our school and our future. And as parents this seems like an even better answer with a more happy kid that is doing better in school because of this change. We need to get out there and make a change in our society that benefits our kids and our future generations by raising the bar and with all of the negative things that go along with these early start times it will be hard to but with this change it will be even more doable and will be…

One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

Changing school start times will lead to positive emotional effects for teens. Educational researcher Kyle Wahlstrom, from the University of Minnesota has been involved in the changing of school start times around the country. Wahlstrom was involved in a changing of school start times in a Minneapolis school district that changed their start time from 7:20 - 8:40 a.m. giving students about one hour of extra sleep. Wahlstrom has seen many positive effects of extra sleep for students. "Students reported less depression when there was a later starting time, and teachers reported that students were more alert and ready for learning. Parents reported that their children were easier to live with because their emotions were more regulated." Wahlstrom stated(http://cehd.umn.edu/pubs/researchworks/sleep.html).…

According to “Most Teens Start School Too Early In Morning To Get Enough Sleep” by Liz Sazbo “allowing high schoolers to sleep in could mean sending elementary kids to school in the dark during the winter, as they would have to take the early schedule. That could pose a safety dangers to the youngest kids as they walk to school or wait at bus stops, Domenech said.” While this maybe true teens are still not getting enough sleep to become good, productive students. If later start times mean later release times schools still need to start later for their students to get as much out of school as possible. Parents shouldn’t be worried about their elementary kids walking to school in the dark during the winter because that could be prevented. Their parents could drive them to school so they don’t have to worry about them walking in the dark. Later start times need to happen so that students of all ages especially teens can get as much out of school as…

If schools delayed the start of the school, communities will have reduced tardiness, sleeping in class, accident rates, improved attendance, and higher test scores. “42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

Researchers have found that 59% of middle schoolers and 87% of high schoolers are getting less than the recomended 8 to 9 hours of sleep a night (National Sleep Foundation). “Conflicts between parents and school districts”(Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health) the conflict with starting school later has had a lot of controversy. Parents think that it is horrifically challenging to move schedules up and back with the school districts. Why? Parents have busy schedules with work and have to change their work setting or call into their job and say that they are late. It is a very confusing aspect because students want to start later for the better benefit of them. On the other hand parents have to get to work early and make sure that there kids are at school at the same time. Parents seem to struggle abundantly when it comes to school starting later. Sometimes they have to call someone to take their kids because they have a different working schedule than their kids going to school. It is a very beneficial change that people in schools need to look into because students seem to like the idea of it. It benefits them on their sleep and the way the day…

First of all, according to sleepingresources.com, “When teens have an early start time and are driving to school in the morning while being tired, they are at a bigger risk for a traffic accident.” This is because when teens are driving and are tired their reaction times are slower. Secondly, tired drivers from early start times isn’t just affecting teens but also the parents who drive their teens to school. According to sleeping resources.com, “drowsiness contributes to over 100,000 car crashes per year.” So when a parent wakes up early to take their child to school they are tired and more at risk to get in a car crash causing them and their child to be in danger. Also, having a later start time for middle schoolers would lower the injuries that happen to the school’s athletes. This is because a tired athlete would be drowsy and have a later reaction time which could put them at higher risk for an injury. So, overall by making middle school start times later students will be much safer and will be at a lower risk for car accidents and injuries during the…

Many schools around the U.S start their session at between 7-8:30 AM. This is a very big issue. Most students are extremely stressed in the morning and are rushing to get to school on time. Going to school so early makes student miss out on a good breakfast. If students got more sleep, they would have a good breakfast, would have time to review their studies, and they would even be less depressed. Just changing the school time by 45 minutes would make a huge difference and solve many problems. The National Sleep Foundation (How Much Sleep Do We Really Need?”) says, “ The amount of time it takes for a student to be “fully” awake is 45 minutes after fully getting up from bed.” Some may say that if schools were to start later, students would still get to school late and there would be no difference. Students that choose to be tardy regardless of the time they are set to go are not aware of what is required either way. The majority of the students will follow the attendance rules if the school hours started later.…
