What Is The Theme Of Tree Girl By Ben Mikaelsen
Courage and hope is the key to survival, according to Gabriella. Gabi is the protagonist of the novel, “Tree Girl”, by Ben Mikaelsen. She endures a tough loss of her siblings, Julia, Antonio, Jorge, Lidia, and Lester. She also has to fight the pain she is going through with her parents. She lost her mom to an evil sickness and her dad to soldiers who had gunned him down. It all started in Guatemala. Guatemala was Gabi’s hometown, it was where she lived, went to school and played. But, one day, her life turned upside down when the soldiers invaded her homeland and everything was destroyed. The theme of my project is hope. Hope represents optimism and positivity. Gabi chooses to live this way because it helps her cope with her losses. …show more content…
The themes are family, knowledge, hope, home, and freedom. These were some of the 5 words that I thought complemented the story well. Family was very important to Gabi. Even with the lost of her family members, she still kept them alive with memories. Knowledge kept Gabi going. She passed her knowledge down to her own students who cherished every moment with her. Hope was what kept her alive. Had she not believed in herself, she would’ve let herself die. She knew she had to find Alicia and even though there was not a big chance she would find her, she continued searching. The search went on for days, weeks and months. Still no Alicia, but she never gave up. This proves how great the bond is between her and her family. The forest had been her home ever since she laid eyes on it. It had been her escape from reality for the longest time. She never knew what it could do for her. When the trees were bare, it exposed her, but when the trees were full, it gave her a place to hide and protect herself. Lastly, freedom was her prize. It didn’t come from just anywhere. It came from her heart, soul, and mind. The courage she had to persevere helped her get through this journey. She did not know what was coming for her in the future. All she had was hope that one day she would reunite with her family. With hope, all of that was made

The theme of this story is to always follow your dreams, no matter what you have to do to fulfill them. Theresa's main goal throughout the whole story was to succeed in every class, have above a 3.0 GPA, and to make a good enough score on the SATs to get into the University of Southern California. Theresa faces many issues that distract her from her goals, such as her best friend Cee-Saw getting pregnant and her newest friend, Devon, getting hurt and ending up in the hospital. Those are two issues she went through socially, she also had a lot of academic issues such as her world history teacher Mr. Wardin being extremely hard on her, and the many college applications she had to fill out, and send on time. The first example is when Armani really wants to go back to the city but Mama says no. The author states, “‘But Mama, I can try to find Daddy and Georgie!’ My heart was about to pop out of my chest” (270). This quote shows the theme by Armani feels bad because she thinks that it was her fault that Daddy and Georgie are gone, but she has hopes that someday they will all find each other again. She wants to find them because she loves them so much and has so much hope that she will find them again. Another quote that shows hope for Armani finding her family is when, Armani kept begging Mama over and over again and Mama saw how she was so grown up and Mama finally said, “‘I want you to go with Miss Priscilla tomorrow”’ (274). This quote shows that Mama lets Armani go and Mama loves Daddy and Georgie and so does Armani so they will do anything to find them. Both quotes show that Mama and Armani love their family and will do anything to keep them together. The theme is also shown in the…
