Book Analysis: Hip Hop High School
Title: Hip Hop High School
Theresa Anderson a.k.a. Tee-Ay, the main character, gets a taste of the hip hop culture as she enters her new high school. The school is full of beat boxers, rappers, and break dancers. The students have their own lingo, and everyone in the school has some kind of nickname. Students aren't as interested in making good grades, as they are in partying, drinking, smoking, and gang banging.

Tone
The tone of the story varies a lot. It goes from funny, to sad, to intense, to happy all over again. I think the overall tone was inspirational. The book is intense when devon gets shot, and he is fighting life or death. This experience sent Theresa through many emotions, and made her very stressed. There were a lot of intense moments in this story, the big fight in the cafeteria of the school, and the moment when her best friend, Cee-saw, goes into labor. One example of how inspirational the story was when her best friend Devon gets shot in the neck, and he recovers successfully. Devon had missed the last three months of school, but was still valedictorian, and attended prom, graduated, and gave a inspirational speech to his peers.

Theme
The theme of this story is to always follow your dreams, no matter what you have to do to fulfill them. Theresa's main goal throughout the whole story was to succeed in every class, have above a 3.0 GPA, and to make a good enough score on the SATs to get into the University of Southern California. Theresa faces many issues that distract her from her goals, such as her best friend Cee-Saw getting pregnant and her newest friend, Devon, getting hurt and ending up in the hospital. Those are two issues she went through socially, she also had a lot of academic issues such as her world history teacher Mr. Wardin being extremely hard on her, and the many college applications she had to fill out, and send on time. Her parents are also a big burden on her, as shown throughout the story, they are very strict and don't

In Lynda Barry’s narrative essay,“The Sanctuary of School,” Barry describes how schools have become a refuge for neglected children across the country, as well as how the ongoing budget, and extracurricular cuts are destroying their refuge. Barry grew up in a neglectful household, which she stated, “The high levels of frustration, depression, and anger in my house made my brother and me invisible,”(pg 1). Being a young child at that time, Barry could only rely on receiving attention at school, since she was nonexistent in her own household. One early morning, Barry arrived at her school before sunrise and was able to assist her school’s janitor. As she continued to aid the janitor, she was…

The writer tone is depressing, negative and an almost malicious undertone. The writer starts the essay off making the reader feel like she is upset with her father is living due to being forced to care for her aging parents. She continues thought the essay to write in a somber view of caring for her aging parents. A good example is when she sates that she is like a Kafka character who kills himself even though he has much to live for. Another statement the writer used to build tone in the essay was one that could be deemed as morbid: I almost don’t know what I envy Bernard Cooper for more—his incomparable literary genius or the fact that his father is dead. Wishing one’s parent was dead goes against all social norms, this leads to the tone of the essay being grim, dark and depressing. The use of negativity and resentment ensure the readers would be aware of the writers tone. The writer continues to develop this tone by inserting statements that seems against social norms, for example: With a sudden angry snort, my father woke up. I won’t say I wish I had hit him over the head with a frying pan to finish the job when it seemed we were so, so close. This showed in a passive aggressive way that she seems to want her father to die. Another example of the writer using a negative tone is when she is discussing Thomas, her Dad’s care giver who stated that he could help her dad live longer and she wrote ”Oh my God—how could he say…

How does sharing benefit society? The sharing of ideas is what allows a culture’s collective body of knowledge to continue expanding, and all creators benefit from this expansion. Academics constantly analyze and borrow from each other’s works as they develop new theses and perform new research, and the world of hip-hop is no different from the world of academia in this sense. In hip-hop, sharing takes the form of sampling – artists sharing musical themes and using each other’s works to create new ones. Hip-hop sampling provides artists with a “jumping-off point” from which they can develop new musical ideas.…

At-Risk youth in need of intervention oftentimes do not seek proper help and instead deal with their issues and frustrations internally, turning to music (specifically Hip Hop/Rap) as an outlet in response to the poor social conditions in their environment (Alvarez, 2012). There is a direct correlation between where a young person is raised (relating to their SES) and their social/emotional outcomes. Urban youth who grow up in poverty and/or are exposed to violence and drugs, are likely to be at a disadvantage from the very start and are more prone to negative social and emotional outcomes, including low self esteem. (Leventhal, Brooks-Gunn, 2000 & Alvarez, 2012).…
