The Hells Angels motorcycle club is spread out all over the world. Holly Yan, a CNN reporter stated that there are over 230 chapters in the US and 26 other countries (2015). She also quoted the Department of Justice saying, “Hells Angels pose a criminal threat on six continents” (Yan, 2015). Just like in any gang it seems, they do have ties to the drug trade. Ghetto Star is a neighborhood “celebrity” known for actions such as gangbanging and dealing drugs (Shakur, Sanyika). For the past four decades gangs have populated the streets of Los Angeles; growing from 18 to 60 from 1972 to 1978, and from 155 to 270 gangs from 1982 to 1996. The bloods and crips in Los Angeles are predominately African Americans; with the exceptions of about four gangs which reside in Long Beach, Carson, Compton, and Inglewood and they consist of Samoan and members from Tongan descent. Gangs aren’t just an urban city problem but gangs have reached out to suburban and rural areas,…

Different aspects of the neighborhoods are claimed by gangs through ownership of land i.e. owning their house or a business, graffiti/tagging, and population of gang members loitering in specific regions. Much like any other natural creature of nature, gang members are territorial, if an individual poses a threat or opposes the group, they will take defense to hold their ground. People can distinguish whether they live near a gang by the graffiti, which is in a sense a signature for gangs like an artist signs their work to claim it. In most neighborhoods you can notice graffiti or “tagging” around buildings, underneath bridges, and garages, which many people despise because many do not want to be associated with unsafe regions. According to…

The 18th Street Gang is primarily a Hispanic gang formed in the 1960’s in Los Angeles (The National Alliance of Gang Investigator’s Association, 2005). It is thought that the origin of the name stemmed from the older Clanton 14 Street gang because of the area where the gang made its’ home base. Although some members are of a mixed racial composite, it is considered one of the oldest and largest of the Hispanic gangs. Because of the acceptance of immigrants, the 18th Street Gang has grown considerably and has expanded throughout California, to the Midwest and to the East Coast. Some of their recruitment techniques involve solicitation in elementary and middle schools that has increased their membership significantly, along with their ties in Mexico and South America (The National Alliance of Gang Investigator’s Association, 2005).…

In many cities such as in California and Chicago where gang violence is at an all-time high volume many people use gang membership as protection. To them it is better to have to join a gang than to be seen as vulnerable and easy targets in the regions they live in. Gangs often do whatever it means to protect their people and this is exactly what some may be in search of.…

Gangs are a partnership arrangement, or a patron-client arrangement rather than as an immutable organizational structure with a clearly defined position. Gangs are made up of certain criminal patrons who trade information, connections with government officials, and access to a network of operatives in exchange for the clients’ economic and political support. For example, drug trade is operated by “small, flexible organizations of criminals which arise due to opportunity and environmental factors”.…

My bias opinion on youth gangs is the same as I view planting a seed. If you plant a seed in bad soil most likely you’ll grow a defected or bad plant. I say that to say this “if a child is raised in an unstructured household most of the time that child will take his home training outside the home. Then we also have our young kids joining gangs that come from good homes, but can’t escape their negative environments once they walk outside their front door. Also some of the youths get involved in gangs looking for something to call a family; these are mostly our kids coming from foster homes, adoption agencies and ect.…

Violence is a substantial problem that has attracted increased attention over the past decade. Many forms of violence are seen on a daily basis however; street gang violence has grown to become the most pervasive form. Street gangs refer to groups of individuals who share a common identity and, in current usage, engage in illegal activities in a particular area. According to data presented by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), there are at least 30,000 street gangs with 800,000 members that have an impact on 2,500 communities all over the United States. A street gang that has greatly impacted these communities is the Bloods. The Bloods were first noted in Los Angeles in the late 1960's, however over the years have spread their ideology to various other major cities along the West and East coast.…

Since the beginning of the decade, contemporary gangs, also known as youth or delinquent gangs, have become a widespread threat to communities throughout the nation, in particular within suburban communities. In 2001, 35% of suburban counties reported gang activity. Once considered largely as an urban phenomenon, gangs have increasingly emerged in smaller communities, presenting a challenge that severely damages local resources. As these gang related crimes increase, officials are trying to find out how and why the existence gangs and their formations have been able to flourish.…

The inner city neighborhoods of Los Angeles are mostly lived in by African-Americans and Hispanics. Since 1970, street gangs have controlled these urban areas of Los Angeles, moving quickly to create illicit economies based on drug trafficking and other illegal activities. Sociologists like William Julius have labeled the denizens of the American ghetto as “the truly disadvantaged” due to the extremely limited opportunities available to them in neighborhoods that normally have failing schools, no access to jobs or training, healthcare facilities that are outdated and over-capacity, and where social services are limited. In some cases, gangs that have long been maligned may even present services to the area in the form of supporting the local economy and preventing external gangs from terrorizing the ghetto’s occupants. While gangs definitely present issues in Los Angeles’ inner city, it is very important to consider that they may be one of the few ways for the gang members to achieve the American Dream.…

    Youth Gangs

Even if local youths are displaying gang symbols such as the colors of big city gangs, this alone does not necessarily signify a ‘real' gang problem. Local groups of youths often imitate big city gangs, generally in an attempt to enhance their self-image or to seek popularity and acceptance among other juveniles. Although community officials or residents occasionally may encounter random signs of gang activity in an area such as graffiti, arrest of a non-local gang member, or other isolated incidents, this is not necessarily indicative of a new and dangerous gang problem that is permanent.…
