What is discrimination? How is discrimination different from prejudice and stereotyping?

Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. (Racial and Ethnic Groups - Chp. 3,pg.61) Discrimination is different from prejudice in the following ways. Prejudice depends upon how a person thinks and feels about a certain group of people. Discrimination is actually acting upon those thoughts and feelings to deny people their equal rights. Stereotypes are unreliable, exaggerated generalizations about all members of a group that do not take individual differences into account. Discrimination is different than Stereotyping because you do not openly deny their opportunites and equal rights by making these generalizations. (Racial and Ethnic Groups- Chp. 2, pgs.33,40)

What are the causes of discrimination?

Discrimination has many causes. People are afraid of things that are different. People of a different color, race, sexual orientation, or religion become targets for this fear. I read a few statements in one of the books in the library that I feel fits this question. “The key to understanding the social function of discrimination is marginalization. Although anyone can become a victim of discriminatory practices, ultimately the essence of discrimination lies in power and privilege. Socially marginalized groups in society tend to be the most likely targets of discriminatory practices.” “(Parrillo VN. Discrimination. Encyclopedia of social problems. Sage Publications, Inc; 2008-01-01:242-245.
p. 243 ↓) Discrimination occurs on two levels: institutional and individual. On the institutional level, discriminatory practices are embedded in the social structures of a society, whereas on the individual level, discrimination takes place during

    1. The main difference between prejudice and discrimination is, prejudice is some preconceived notion about an individual, a group, or a race that demonstrate some sort of judgment upon them. This idea of prejudice is usually kept inside of the individual, so as to have a quiet judgment among people. Discrimination, however, is prejudice put into practice. Those who discriminate actively practice prejudice; it is no longer kept inside, but rather openly practiced against the people. Prejudice is best described as an attitude towards a certain group of peoples based solely on their membership in that social or ethnic group, but discrimination is an action taken against those members, the behavioral manifestation of prejudice.…

According to Google definition, discrimination is described as “the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex”. It is also important to note that prejudice is one of the synonyms of discrimination; therefore, it would be safe to conclude that there is not much difference between discrimination and prejudice. However, prejudice is described on Google as “preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience”. Last but not least, stereotype on Google is defined as “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing”. Discrimination, stereotypes, and prejudice are rather a state of surprising events which lead to heated arguments among the prey and the predator, students, public in general, politicians, and even sometimes scholars.…

The concept of discrimination and prejudice have both existed almost since the foundation of society itself. It is generally accepted and seen that prejudice and discrimination are common throughout the world, both different from each other, but still directly relating to one another. Both can be seen and observed in most places in different forms, styles, and degrees. Prejudice and discrimination are intrinsically related to each other but are also two different concepts as well. Prejudice has to do with the inflexibility and irrational attitudes and opinions held by members or groups in society about another group.…

Discrimination can be confused with other terms such as prejudice and stereotype. It is important to differentiate between the three terms so that we better understand what we deal with in society. Stereotypes are images held in our minds in regards to certain racial or cultural groups, without consideration of whether the images held are true or false. Stemming from stereotypes is prejudice. The prejudicial attitude occurs when we prejudge a person, good or bad, on the basis that the stereotypes associated with the person/group being prejudged are true. Discrimination is the combination of the terms mentioned above, but involves actually acting out with unfair treatment, directing the action towards the person/group. Prejudice and discrimination do not just occur racially, but it is found among gender, religion, culture, and geographical background. Remember that prejudice is a result of attitude and discrimination is a result of action.…

Discrimination is unfair or unequal treatment of an individual based on characteristics such as age, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, and plenty other of reasons. Discrimination can occur in schools, health care services, buses/trains, housing, employment, and when voting. This is a big issue and has had a major impact on the past and present. Discrimination has been around for thousands of years and is still going on today. Discrimination has been going on since the Martin Luther King era and that’s what he tried to stop. Movements and protests have been formed to stop discrimination, but unfortunately it is still going on in today’s society. Even though it hasn’t completely stopped, discrimination has been declining in many civil cases but it still exists. Not all forms of discrimination is illegal also. For example, two people are competing to get the last apartment available in a certain section and person 1 has 8 cats and person 2 has 0 pets. The landlord would more than likely accept person 2 because it’s less hassle with the pet issue. In a way that discrimination is illegal is when two people go in for a job interview. Person 1 is an African American female with a college degree and person 2 is a Caucasian female dropout, and the employer picks the Caucasian female just because she’s not black. This form of racial job discrimination is very wrong and needs to stop because the best person should be able to get the job if there resume is good enough.…
