A Hero’s Journey On April 15, 1926, in the land that touches the sky, Brogan, a special and unique person was born. Early on, Brogan had a challenging life, with little contact from his family, or friends. His mother, Theresa, died giving birth, and his father had to continue working as a miner in the mountains of North Carolina. Brogan’s father was constantly working in an attempt to support the family, but rarely had time to come home. Brogan continued his early years as a loner, spending most of his time in the mountains. In 1943, at the age of 18, Brogan’s town was struck with a tragedy. The local mine caved in and trapped Brogan’s father, along with 50 other men. Upon arrival, Brogan sees men riding spears, a white blanket over the Earth, and was hit by cold winds. This was an entirely new location and environment for Brogan to operate in, as these mountains are higher, colder, and steeper than North Carolina’s. Here, Brogan, along with a platoon, were immediately processed, issued equipment, and began training. Brogan quickly showed his expertise in the mountains, which thoroughly impressed his company commander, first sergeant, and his instructors. They began training Brogan in more advanced techniques, but even then, Brogan outperformed his instructors. Because of this, Brogan was made a squad leader and promoted rapidly. Still, Brogan didn’t understand why he was able to outperform everyone at Camp Hale, but his leadership realized his strength, determination, and devotion early on. On June 6, the Army invaded France, which made international headlines. The Brazilian military joined the Army on the first operation, taking Mount Belvedere. The men starting fighting on Mount Belvedere, while simultaneously introducing the Brazilian forces to combat. They easily took the first peak, but had to move on to Mount Castello immediately after. Brogan and his squad, along with the Brazilians took land between Mount Belvedere and Mount Castello. Later that day, the Germans counterattacked and recaptured everything except Mount Belvedere. Brogan led his men, the following night, and recaptured the land, pushing the Germans back to Mount Castello. After a few weeks of fighting up the mountain, the final assault was planned. By the end, the Brazilians were supposed to take Mount Castello by themselves, while 10th Mountain was going to capture Monte Delle Toracca. Brogan and his squad moved into position at Monte Delle Toracca and began seizing it. The resistance was stiff at the base.
