What Is Beowulf An Epic Hero
What is a “Hero”? We’ve heard this question so many times, but yet everyone seems to have a different outlook. Beowulf is by far one of the best epic heroes of all time. The story of Beowulf was written back in 700 C.E by an unknown author. The original style of the writing was old English, and currently only one of the original copies of the story remains. Beowulf is such a good example of an epic hero because he adheres to many of the common qualities of an epic hero. He was determined, courageous, fearless, and left a mark on the land that will be talked about for years to come. But everything didn’t end up being all peaches and cream. Beowulf met his match; a dragon that had been awaken by thieves (Tharaud). Beowulf is faced with a danger to the village when the dragon begins to burn homes, and kills the people of the villages. Beowulf decided to take eleven of his most worthy men, along with the thieves that initiated the conflict, with him to aid in the battle. Once the men see the dragon they flee in fear of their lives leaving Beowulf alone to fight the beast. All expect for one: Wiglaf (Tharud). He stood by Beowulf’s side with his cheering and light help. Beowulf was able to kill the dragon, but he was still hurt in the process (Ogilvy). Beowulf went into that fight thinking that he had a group of strong men standing behind him to be there when he needed him, but he was wrong. He had to pretty much fight this battle alone. And while the task at hand was extremely hard, and essentially left him mortally wounded, he still went and fought until one of the two were dead. Beowulf knew the strength of this dragon and it didn’t stop him. Just one look at the beast sent most men running, but not him. He stood his ground like a man to ensure he sought revenge on the very thing that began to tear his town
