Comparing Heroes In Beowulf And Sir Gawain
There are many definitions of the word ‘hero’ but Dictionary.com defines a hero as a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities, a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal, the principal male character in a story, play, film, etc. While growing up, I can remember many instances where we were asked to write about and describe who we felt our ‘hero’ was. The common and cliche answer amongst many people is “my mom.” Under the dictionary definition I don’t know that all of my classmates moms, including my own, are heroes.

While they have what I consider basic hero features they differ in many aspects. Beowulf, as a pagan, believes in Fate, "Fate will unwind as it must" (line 189) while Sir Gawain has Christian beliefs. Sir Gawain is under the chivalric code and Beowulf is not. Unlike Beowulf, Sir Gawain exhibits some cowardice in his hiding of the girdle that Lady Bertilak gives him as she tries to seduce him. Beowulf's struggle against Grendel is more of an epic struggle of two great opposing forces in the world, but Sir Gawain's conflicts are of lesser value, …show more content…
Rather than send warriors to fight the dragon, Beowulf goes himself to fight the dragon. Taking sword and shield he engages the beast in combat. However, Beowulf runs into complications with this beast, “the iron Shield, and for a time it held, protected Beowulf as he’d planned; then it began to melt.” (720-722) Beowulf finds himself in defeat for the first time. Then Wiglaf, one of his kinsmen, comes to his aid and together they defeat the dragon. Yet, Beowulf is mortally wounded and is about to die. Before dying, he passes the throne to Wiglaf. Thus the hero dies in a heroic manner and with pride, after fighting a foe that once again threatened a people. Beowulf is not only a hero, but also an example to all warriors of what they should strive to

Sir Gawain and Beowulf are both heroic figures by definition. In both stories they go on a journey, experience battles between good and evil, and have much of the same powers. Although they have a lot in common, they are unique. While Beowulf is an ideal hero and king, Gawain is more of a chivalric knight who comes across as a relatable figure. 484 - 488). Judging from Beowulf's boast he means to not only protect his kingdom and people but to also protect his honor. Beowulf showed that he is both determined to carry out his duty to his people. Once Beowulf engages the dragon in battle, Beowulf, " Fell back; its breath flared,/ And he suffered , wrapped around in swirling/ Flames --a king, before, but now/ A beaten warrior. None of his comrades,/ Came to help him his brave and noble/ Followers; they ran for their lives, fled/ Deep in a wood" (Canto 35 l. 566 - 571). Consequently, Beowulf defeats the dragon and is fatally injured when he delivers the final blow. Beowulf isn't even concerned that his comrades had abandoned him, but he is concerned with finishing his final labor of his legacy. Beowulf could've given into death's persuasive embrace, but he had a responsibility to uphold. That last duty to himself was his final labor, and with Wiglaf's help, he finally finished it, too. Even though Beowulf was old and his strength and sword had failed him, He still had a final duty to fulfill, and his tenacity and determination helped him to finish his…

“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”. (Campbell) When most people think of a hero, they think of celebrities or superheroes; like Adele or Batman. These people are not the only heroes in the world. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. and Candace Lighter are heroes. These people made an impact on other peoples lives without being superheroes. A hero is someone who impacts other people’s lives in a positive way.…

A president must be equal to his people but Trump hasn’t really done that. He spent thousands of dollars so they could build a wall so immigrants aren’t able to get in. He has many opinions on people without even knowing them but judges them on their race. He kicked out people from the military because of their sexuality. King Arthur and Beowulf’s personalities are completely opposite from one another. King Arthur is a very compassionate, and humble person. He doesn’t care about being praised, or making a name for himself. All he wants to do, as king, is what he thinks is right and best for everyone. Beowulf is a completely different story. He is very cocky, and prideful. I would consider him a show-off too because of the fact that he killed Grendel with his bare hands. Beowulf does lead his people well, but I find him to be very conceited, and only doing things that will bring him fame. Like the fact that he cared so much about being forgotten, that he wanted to be buried with treasure when he died, and Arthur didn’t care at all if he even had any recognition or memorial after dying.…

Everyone has a different definition of a hero. Mine is a person who has impacted my life, or lives in general. They are selfless and genuine people who care about others more than themselves. A hero has no gender, size, or age. Anyone is capable of being a hero, but it’s very rare to find someone who possesses all of the qualities. People like a war veteran, a public figure, or an everyday person are all people who fit my definition of a hero. Irena Sendler, Tyler Joseph, and my mom are prime examples of what I think a hero is and should…

A hero to an immense quantity of people is often their mothers, fathers, brothers, and so forth because of their noble qualities.
