What Is An Arthropod?
What is an Arthropod? Well you see them about every day even in the cold months. One easy way to determine an Arthropod is that they always have segmented bodies which means they have 2 or 3 segmented body parts. Another way is that they usually have many jointed legs. They also have an exoskeleton so they have a suit of armor on almost. They are also cold blooded. Some examples of Arthropods are spiders, lobsters, crabs, insects, crayfish, krill, and scorpions. Also, about 85% of animals are Arthropods. Arthropods fly, creep, and crawl. They live in ponds to streams to oceans, they are everywhere. To crabs to krill,to lobsters and to spiders.

For this project I had observed the coolest bug balls on earth, the roly- poly. They are commonly known as the roly-poly, also pill bug, and wood lice. Its scientific name is Armadilidum vulgare. It is actually not an insect, it is an isopod ( a type of arthropod). It’s genus is Armadilidum, it’s Phylum is Arthopoda, and Subphylum is Crustacea. I have observed that the exoskeleton is a blue-gray, it is an invertebrate, it’s mouth, antennae and eyes are located on it’s head, and it rolls into a perfect sphere as defense when being disturbed or threatened. It has 2 pairs of antennae (one barely visible), it has 2 eyes, it has 7 pairs of jointed legs, and it’s about 3/8 inches long.…

The Earth’s largest phylum is Arthropoda, including centipedes, millipedes, crustaceans, and insects. Insects are the largest and most successful class of animals on Earth. This success, zoologists believe, is attributed from certain biological traits such as their small size or ability to fly for some (Postlethwait & Hopson, 2010). The exoskeleton of most insects supports them inside but also protects them from outside. John Meyer, professor at NCSU, explains as a "suit of armor", the exoskeleton can resist both physical and chemical attack (2007). He also covers how their small size allows them to hide, flight allows them to escape, high fertility and high fecundity allows for a large reproductive potential, metamorphosis promotes survival, and their ability to adapt easily (2007). All these characteristics listed above amongst several others are the reason why insects are the most successful animals on earth.…

There are many interesting facts about the pill bug. The pill bug is also known as sowbugs, woodlice, or by their scientific name Armadillidiidae vulgare . Some of their physical characteristics include a hard black, brown, or gray shell (depending on the species being studied), sharply angled antennae, seven pairs of legs, flattened or round-backed profile and an oval shape. Their head has 4 pairs of mouthparts and is followed by the 7 main trunk segments, which bear the walking limbs. Pill bugs only grow from 0.2 inches up to 0.6 inches. They are part of the class Crustacea and are related to lobsters, crabs, shrimp, and daphnia (water fleas). Crustaceans are also part of a larger group, Arthropoda (jointed-legged animals). All arthropods have a trunk divided into segments, a tough outer cuticle, and limbs that are flexible joints.…

The Sea Spider is one of the millions of different creatures that live in the some of the coldest waters, and around 7,000 meters down in the oceans of Arctic and Antarctic, as well as the Caribbean and Mediterranean seas. Sea spiders have over 1300 know different species, some species include names like Pantopoda or Pycnogonids. Usually these species are categorized as Arthropods and the sea spiders are under the class of Pycnogonida. The sizes of the sea spiders range between 1 millimeter to over 90 cm (35 inches), the smaller species of sea spiders are usually found in more shallow waters and are under the traditional classification as chelicerates. These marine arthropods are very similar to traditional spiders, they are small in the body with eight legs. Some of the sea spider species have five or six pairs of legs instead of eight legs. With the small size and thin bodies and legs, sea spiders do not have a necessary respiratory system,…

What environment do wolf spiders prefer to live in and what is their response to a change in environment? After performing experiments on wolf spiders it was determined that they prefer to reside in an area covered with leaves over an area devoid of any material. It was also determined that temperature plays a role in how much weight a spider can gain. As temperatures lower spiders on average put on less weight than spiders in warmer temperatures. The wolf spiders in my experiment also showed a response in the form of movement to immediate fluorescent lighting. Size was shown to be a determining factor in the time taken for wolf spider interactions with other wolf spiders.…

Armadillos are very unique mammals. They can range in size from 5 inches to 5 feet in length. They also can weight from 3 ounces to 120 pounds. Armadillos have short and strong legs that are adapted to burrowing or digging. Their legs are very muscular and can be used very efficiently for swimming. Armadillos have four toes present on their front feet and five toes on their hind feet.(McDonough,1997) They walk on the tips of their feet and only leave three-toed tracks that are often mistaken for bird tracks. All of the armadillo’s toes contain claws that are very distinct and well developed and aid the creatures to be fast and efficient diggers. They use their ability to dig to avoid trouble from predators and shelter, but they also use their claws to dig up food sources such as insects in a dead log.…

    Animal Behavior

Ethology is the science based on animal behavior. Many animal behaviors involve the movement of animals within its own environment. Inherited traits are traits that an animal is born with and learned behaviors are what an animal learns on its own to adapt to the surroundings. Innate behaviors like breathing and learned behaviors are talking or walking. Pill bugs are the animals we observed in the lab. Pill bugs are a family of woodlice and are a crustacean in the isopoda order. Most people know them as roly polies. They can roll into a ball which they use as a defense mechanism against predators. They often do this when they feel a vibration or pressure applied to them. Pill bugs are also decomposers and break down leftovers, feces, and so forth.…
