What is American about American Literature? Consider at least 3 texts from the semester in your three-page response. How do these texts reflect the development of a national sensibility?
What is American about American Literature is that American authors write it. It is also the cultural and social values of American. In American literature it includes the setting of America, the ideals and events that have taken place in America that shape what America is today. It is usually a famous influential author who writes about the history, the landscape, the freedom and the American experience that they have came to know themselves. Author such as Fredrick Douglas, Mary Rowlandson and Walt Whitman are remembered for the literature they wrote about their experiences as an American and how it shaped American society and culture. There were many different period of American history, from the times of the colonial era to the post independence era and the different authors personal encounters and experiences shaped American literature and history for what it is today.
Fredrick Douglas was not just an American but also an American slave. Slavery was apart of American society and from slavery he became free and wrote about his experiences as an American slave. He stood and believed in freedom. He fought for his freedom and dedicated his life to the cause in reflection of the Declaration of Independence, which represent life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. The American dream of that time was freedom and equality for slaves amongst white Americans. He took those experiences he went through and wrote about them, in which they went down as a part of the history of American literature. In the Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglass, an American slave; he talks about all the experiences he encounter while being a slave and it is a representation of what America was.
