What Does Basketball Mean To Me Essay
Gorham was, and still is, a town full of talented athletes. My mother was a natural, I however, didn't get that gene, unfortunately. I have seen her basketball scrapbook with all of these old, oranged newspaper clippings showing her with her short poofy hair down as she dribbled the ball, or her being guarded by someone a foot taller than her. She was inducted to the GHS Sports Hall of Fame a few years ago. I grew up playing rec basketball. I wasn't great, but it was fun and what 7 year old is actually good at basketball. I just ran around the hot gym filled with sweaty kids, decked out in my baggy shorts and sporting my oh so fashionable sports goggles. Fast forward a few years and there I am in the 5th grade. Girls were developing skills and getting better at basketball. Travel basketball was an option because we were getting older and I, along with a …show more content…
One person was cut, and surprisingly, it wasn't me. But that didn't mean I got great news either. I was pulled aside with two other girls by the coach and she told us that we made the team, but wouldn't play every game. We took turns playing the games. I would play once every three games, still not sure how much I would play because it depended on who we were playing.
It really didn't feel good to have kids and parents come to games to see two us sitting on the end of the bench filling out papers on what we did during the game. Similar to what managers would do, except we wore jerseys.
The next year, I tried out for the 8th grade school basketball team. I made the team. And actually made the team this time. I would get to play and everything. I was ecstatic… until a week later when I ended up on crutches for injuring my growth plate in my ankle. By this point, it just seemed as if the world didn't want me to play basketball. Luckily it healed alright and I got to play after a month or

My summer was an inch away from being perfect. I had a good GPA and people to hangout with, but I was missing one thing: starting on the basketball team. Basketball was going great beside that one problem, but I just could not remove the obsession of starting from my mind. Basketball and happiness go hand in hand for me. Over the next month basketball and my attitude started spiraling downwards and brought my happiness and friendships with them. I isolated myself from nearly everybody and dreaded basketball more and more every day. It’s funny how one thing can truly control your life. I understand if your a professional athlete or your in love with a women, but I was just a sixteen year old who loved the game. I understand that you need to treat sports as not a job,…

It was a fun game to watch, as we all thought about us playing on that court the next day. It was finally game day, and we had to play Stewartville, 2nd place from Minnesota. They were athletic, but we ended up winning the close match. Our next rival was the Bismark Thunder, 1st in North Dakota and last year's national champions. We were nervous since the were taller, stronger, faster, and just better than us. We lost to them, but we were fired up to play for 3rd place. The team headed over to the Target Center for the 3rd place game. Playing there was so neat, being under the lights, having them announce your name, and just being with the tam. We played Grafton, who placed 2nd at state in North Dakota. They looked like us, athletically, so we weren’t too worried. We came out with a bang, ready to play. Darby and Ellie pushed it up the court on fast breaks, giving us the early lead. Rilee and I played great defense on the post, as well as Marlee on the wing. Jenny came in and scored a couple before halftime. We were tied 17-17 at the half, and we knew we would have to work even harder. Halftime was over, and we played our hearts out the rest of the game. Mavis and Paige played great offensively, as well as Taylor on defense. We beat Grafton, 36-34, with Darby’s 1:00 left, 2-point shot. We were so happy that we had pulled off that win! We spent the next hour at the…

It was winter season and that meant basketball. This year was special because I got to play for Davidson Day’s seventh and eight-grade team. See at our school the middles school ran through 5th to 8th. The middle school basketball teams were divided into a 5th-6th-grade team and a 7th 8th grade team. This season was different; we would play more games and different teams. Also we got a new coach and older teammates. Tryouts were rough; the older kids were picking on the 7th graders constantly. I was the only one they liked because I was good. The season got even worse. The 7th graders never played in the games and sometimes in the locker room older kids would yell at us for messing up. This was horrible to watch and be apart of.…

After boosting myself up, I finally decided to try out. I was told we would have a new coach. I was a little scared that we wouldn’t have our old coach anymore. Also, when the team was mad a little after, our old coach came back just in time. Knowing that if we had a chance to get our old coach back was wonderful. Because nothing would be the same. Every sport and routines are different from the beginning to the end whole different start.…

I was born in a country where basketball was not so popular. It was mostly for the rich people, because they were the ones that could afford paying lots of money to the coach, and the team to be able to play and learn the game. Since there wasn't too many basketball coaches in Iran, we didn't have many basketball teams for different age groups. Out of all of my friends I had in Iran for the 11 years I lived there, only one of them played basketball in a league. He wasn't even playing for his own age group either, he was playing 1 year up. He was really good of what I could remember, but I just thought that because I didn't know how to play. Has something like that happened to you ever when you see somebody doing something and you know nothing about it and think to yourself "WOW, he's really good", but it turns out they only know the basics!!! Now remember this, that only one of my friends played basketball, and he was really good; because we will get to this later on in the story.…

Growing up, I lived thirty minutes away from my school. This caused me to miss out on the after school activities all my friends were doing, such as Little Wolves basketball or cheer camp, because my only ride home left during practices. During middle school, I had moved into town where my school was only 3 minutes away instead. In seventh grade, you can start to play volleyball and basketball as an in school sport; since I'd never played before, I was too shy and scared to try out.…

When I was introduced to sports in high school, I played soccer, football and basketball. Playing soccer was not the kind of physical game that I liked to play because I was not really too good at kicking the ball with my foot; I didn’t like it too much. Playing Football, I got hit and got injured too much so I just didn’t think that I was fast enough to run those many yards, but basketball was one of the sports that I really liked to play and enjoyed the most. For three reasons. Physical, skill, and health.…
