What Are The Similarities Between The Veggie Police And Lunch Menu Options
In the technology age emails have become a viable source of communication. If it be to a spouse or to a future employer having the proper skills to communicate is vital. Being able to convey your thoughts as to not be misconstrued can be a literacy challenge. This was properly shown in the two emails describing a mothers frustration with the lunch menu at public schools.“ The Veggie Police” and “ Lunch Menu Options” display a level of frustration as well as viable options. Both of these feelings were portrayed with different tones. This technique shows the readers how the same point can be made in different ways.
The first email,written in a familiar tone,a problem as well as frustration is shown. In “ The Veggie Police” the author writes using popular short hand, for example the ending “ TTYL”. Emphasis at the end of statements comes up on three different occasions, same with multiple question marks. Using punctuation in this manner gives the email a backdrop of quizzical fury. Another example of the tone would come from the words themselves. Saying, “ I am going to take a freaking stand” and “ this is so stupid” is a tone that would not be used to address a person of authority.

Anger was not portrayed with capitalization or exclamation marks as the first email. Rather methodical and specific comments where made, as well as a confident stance with the details being presented. Words such as “ I know, I am sure” solidify these facts. Listing the current lunch menu showed the email recipient exactly where the problem is. Research was laid out giving a positive example to why the issue should be of importance. Giving the problem a well thought solution, and ending the email with “ the hope of working together” set the tone as helpful

    The register of the texts varies greatly. In text E we see an overall formal register adopted, this could simply be the manner in which the author speaks to his father and could adopt more informality if the letter was to a friend. For example we see the formal address of ‘Dear father’ and ‘glad to find you are all in the enjoyment of good health’. Text F shows far more informality as this email is addressing friends where informal address would be common. For example we see the informal opening address of ‘hola people’, this helping lighten the mood of the readers as the email comes from a military environment. Both texts show informality through the use of ellipsis and elision, for example text E uses ‘Sept’ and text F uses ‘what’s going with things’. This helps keep the reader at ease as these aspects are more commonly seen in spoken utterance. Text E uses some formal polysyllabic lexis which would indicate the author is of a relatively high intelligence, even though his writing is non-standard. The use of ‘addition’ and ‘encampment’ show the formality. Text F shows a greater use of monosyllabic lexis mainly for the speed of typing and ease of reading. The formal use of ‘orifice’ is seen, however, I believe this is for comedic effect and helps show the authors own idiosyncratic lexis. The use of modern colloquialisms of ‘redders’ and ‘honking’ help give text F further informality and humour.…
