Tweets, texts, emails, posts. New research says the Internet can make us lonely and depressed—and may even create more extreme forms of mental illness (Dokoupil 2012). We've created a society where even the most basics functions of everyday life strongly depend on technology (Sagan 2013). This is definitely not the ideal situation to improve our physical and mental wellbeing instead it is harming it. Rather than having an enjoyable life and being prosperous we are being controlled by our addiction to the internet and related technologies such as computers, phones and tablets. Throughout the generations there has been an increasing use of the internet and new technologies because it cures our desires, which has led to an increase in obesity, low self-esteem issues and less face to face social contact and therefore means our wellbeing is diminishing.
Obesity in past generations has not been such a big issue because people where always outdoors being active. Since the introduction of the internet obesity has dramatically increased because people are not getting sufficient exercise due to the fact that they are sitting indoors playing online games and not burning the calories. Online gaming is significant too generation Y because it provides them with entertainment and enjoyment without having to leave the comfort of their own home, but in previous generation online gaming did not exist or was not as popular so children had to go outside to amuse themselves. When I was ten I used to always go to the park with friends and family but my sister who is ten now just plays online games and hardly gets outdoors. Within the seven year gap there has been a sudden shift from young active children to technology addicted obese children. Online gaming is not only a cause of obesity but has also become a major problem because it affects the wellbeing of not only the person playing the game but also the people around them. The Shallows: What Internet is Doing to Our Brains is nonfiction book written by Nicholas Carr who asserts and cautions the effects that internet has on everyone to this day and even more so in the future.     “Isolated by the Internet” an essay written by Clifford Stoll pinpoints exactly what researchers believe the internet is doing too much of today’s society. Stoll explains in detail that Internet is breaking apart family values, slowing personal interaction, distancing reality, and robbing personal time. Clifford Stoll has provided evidence that the internet is breaking apart many families and distancing them from one another. For example, Stoll expresses that many parents bring their work home, and spend only six to eight minutes a day talking with their children (106). Furthermore, Stoll states that productivity in the home takes away from playtime that even in our alone time work seeps into even the most intimate of moments (107,108). Although internet is a fast, aid in society it can also slow basic personal interaction “These electronic intermediaries dull our abilities to read each other’s gestures ad facial expressions, to express our feelings, to strike up conversations with strangers, to craft stories, to tell jokes” (106). (107) He brings in psychologists and scientist points of view that contradict significantly with those of major computing companies. For example Stoll references to psychology professor Philip Zimbardo who states that technological advances cause shyness which is a basic lack of communication skill, where as Intel stated “This is not about the Technology, per se; it’s about how it is used (105,106). Stoll uses Zimbardo’s personal account to explain computer isolation, Zimbardo will occasionally walk down the hallway and say hello and to some this is shocking and feels it is invading their space (110).
