Reflecting on the required video, Stages of language development, ponder the “wait time” used by the teacher in the video. Address the following questions in your journal:

The video shows the actual performance of students at the five stages of oral English Language Acquisition. The stage one enactment of the Silent Period (can last 0 to 6 months (Syrja (2011 p. 35)) shows two male students. One student with proficiency answering the teacher’s questions about the other student and the other student is silent. The stage two Early Production Stage (can last six months to 1 year Syrja (2011p. 35))) enactment shows a girl student talking quietly with one or two word phases answering questions. The stage three enactment Speech Emergence (can last 1 to 3 years Syrja (2011 p.35)) shows a girl thinking out her questions and answers. She sentences has errors but she is doing a good performance. The stage four enactment Intermediate Language Proficiency (takes up to 3 to 5 years Syrja (2011 p. 35)) with a girl talking about her friends and what class she likes at school. The girl is making strong statements and long sentences and thinking about her answers. The stage five enactment Advanced Fluency Stage (Syrja (2011p. 36)) shows an adult man who is in the grade level classroom talking with fluency and discussing his additional support how he learned English for example watching television and having friends help him out to learn and having the vocabulary and a native speaker . These five stages enactments on Language Development depicts the language acquisition that is required to become a successful English Language Learner

    Week 4 Journal Summarizing

    David Foster Wallace’s “Consider the Lobster” is an in-depth 2004 article about the annual Maine Lobster Festival. The event is held every July in an area of Maine known as the mid-coast, which Wallace describes as, “…from Owl’s Head and Thomaston in the south, to Belfast in the north” (Wallace.2004). Throughout the narrative, Wallace deftly uses concrete language to bring the reader into the tents at the festival, Styrofoam plate in hand along with him. When describing the fare on offer for instance, Wallace talks about the soft drinks being “iceless and flat” and describes the coffee as “convenience store coffee”. Apart from being fairly humorous, these descriptions help the reader immerse themselves in the narrative. We’ve all had awful and overpriced meals at county fairs and so when we read Wallace’s description, we know exactly what he is talking about. Wallace’s overall take on the festival is that it is a slice of a vanishing Americana, but perhaps it is one that should be relegated to the past. Festivals like the one Wallace attended used to be much more commonplace as a way for areas of the country to celebrate regional interests which may seem unworthy of celebration in other areas. Although enjoyed and heartily endorsed by most locals Wallace says, several national groups, including PETA have been campaigning against the festival on the grounds of animal cruelty sine the 1990’s. The local opinion is characterized most succinctly by Dick, who Wallace introduces as “our florid and extremely gregarious rental car guy”, who says when asked if boiling lobsters alive is tantamount to animal cruelty, “There’s a part of the brain in people and animals that lets us feel pain and lobster’s brains don’t have that part”(2004. page 5). Wallace explains to the reader that Dick’s opinion is wrong on a scientific level, and in doing so conveys the general mood of…

    I have witnessed the stages of conflict in my relationships on a daily basis, especially when it comes to my sixteen year old daughter and her attitude, we often disagree. Our greatest challenge that we deal with the most is trying to manage her diabetes in public. Lately she has gained this attitude of she knows what is best for her. She wants to be independent and thinks that she does not need my guidance or opinion. Often times, this cause a power struggle between the child and the parent. In reality, she does not see a problem with her managing it alone. In the past, allowing her to self-manage her diabetes caused an increase in her A1-C. We resolved the problem by coming to a verbal agreement. I came up with a plan that would allow me to be trusting and for her to feel independent. The idea is for her to check her blood sugar levels with her testing kit and every Thursday we will get together and review the numbers. She had to agree with sitting down and discussing any changes that needs to be made without conflict. We both have agreed to meet one another half way and work together to ensure her health as a team.…

    Nursing has always been a passion for me, something about the gratification from helping others regain optimal functionality is refreshing. I witnessed this feeling years ago when I had to honored of assisting my grandmother with her post care after having a triple bypass in 2003.     This paper looks at the potential of using DVDÐdigital versatile discÐfor language learning. Seven hypotheses are presented on how oral pro®ciency may be developed within multimedia classroom environments. These hypotheses are culled from several areas of SLA research. They focus on how language acquisition may be accomplished within a FL teaching situation, i.e., in the home country of the language learner with little or no face-to-face access to native speakers of the target language. It is argued that multimedia applications, particularly digital video, provide language teachers and learners with effective means to make language acquisition in the classroom viable in a way that has not been possible before the advent of powerful multimedia computers. Consequently, foreign language classrooms need to be equipped with multimedia computers and projectors so that digital video may be used for presentation and practice as well as the acquisition of listening and speaking pro®ciency. Through digital videoÐand through other features of digital media such as easy communication around the worldÐteaching and learning conditions in FL classrooms may become similar to conditions that apply when living in the target culture. It is important that teachers have access to these new media so that they can integrate them in classroom activities. In this paper, I will focus primarily on the acquisition of listening and speaking pro®ciency because these skills often play only a minor role in FL classrooms despite the fact that they often ®gure prominently in curricular guidelines and statements of objectives.
