Week 1 CheckPoint Input Data and Output Process
For this assignment I chose two of the most popular weekly news programs. The first was “Meet the Press” from my local NBC affiliate out of Chicago on March 2nd Sunday morning. It was hosted by Chuck Todd and aired at 10am. The second was from my local Fox channel also based in Chicago and was “Fox News Sunday”. It was hosted by Chris Wallace and aired at 9am on March 2nd Sunday morning. I chose these two shows due to the fact they aired at approximately the same time, on the same day, and therefore were in direct competition. Additionally Fox news is generally regarded to be a conservative based network, while NBC and their affiliates are generally considered to be influenced by liberal ideas.
At first glance, both news programs covered the same stories. Obviously the biggest story of the day was the crisis in the Ukraine. They both also covered Jan Brewer’s vetoing of a bill in Arizona that protected religious freedoms over gay rights. While both broadcasts contained other segments that were generally “fluff” in nature, these were the primary topics of the day and what I chose to base my analysis on.
When Chris Wallace of Fox news began he led off with a bold statement of how the US government was accusing Russia of an invasion to the Ukraine. He interviewed the chairman of the house intelligence committee, Mike Rogers. On the contrary Chuck Todd interviewed John Kerry the Secretary of State. I noticed immediately the different levels of authority between the two sources. Chris Wallace solidified my theory when stating that John Kerry was not made available to Fox news but was to the other networks even though they were an hour apart. During the interviews the political bias was evident. Chris Wallace and Mike Rogers focused more on the history of President Obama and the ineffectiveness of his idle threats by continuously bringing up the so-called red line that was crossed in Syria and the use of chemical weapons.
