Tiffany Luu 1200 The Truth: Something People Need Today “If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth” - Stephen Colbert The Daily Show, starring Jon Stewart, and The Colbert Report, starring Stephen Colbert, have become an important news source in today’s society. Even though their shows are based of off comedy, they display an accurate depiction of US politics through humor and exaggeration. Both Stewart and Colbert’s tactics truthfully inform people about current events as opposed to politicians, special interest groups, and media, which often manipulate people’s understanding. This ability was recently demonstrated in their discussion of Paul Ryan. This year, the vice presidential candidate for the Republican Party, Paul Ryan, gave a sensational convention speech that stirred up the crowd. However, a clip from The Daily Show, “The Road to Jeb Bush 2016 - Paul Ryan's Speech,” exposes Ryan’s speech, like many other political leaders’, as misleading. Rep. Kevin McCarthy: The difference with Paul Ryan is that you get the honesty… Form. Rep. Alan Simpson: … spokesman of hard truth Steve King: … a man who’s not afraid to tell the truth Stewart: Paul Ryan is so honest every time he talks his nose shrinks. Paul Ryan is so honest that his pokers tell is I’m staying in but I have terrible cards. In this clip, Stewart satirically makes his point by using the classic movie Pinocchio as an allusion. He says Ryan’s nose shrinks because when Pinocchio lies, his nose grows. Stewart showed a glimpse of politicians who praise Ryan as truthful in order to mock these supporters. According to “Top 5 Fibs In Paul Ryan’s Convention Speech,” Ryan fabricated many supposed facts in his speech. For instance, he claimed to have run multiple marathons and claimed his best time was “2 hour and 50-something.” It turns out he actually finished the marathon in 4 hours and 1 minute and only ran one marathon. Ryan also said he would protect

Chris Matthews, who has been active in the political scene for decades, shows a good (if poorly expressed) understanding of how a lawyer from WWII general or an actor from California can play the right political cards to win the presidency. In his book "Hardball", Matthews asserts that the game of politics to be one more of subtle nuances and individual technique than a matter simply of luck or formula, as many people are inclined to believe. A candidate must show ambition and a natural knack for leadership to even stand apart from his peers. He must have good communication skills, whether on the personal level or on the group level. And perhaps most importantly, he must be willing to compromise, to work with delegates both from his own party and with the opposition, and must do so in such a way that his enemies somehow feel indebted to him. Once an aspiring politician has mastered these lesser-known tricks of the trade, he is ready to play "hardball" politics.…

One of the most famous of his on the spot assertions was when he said that “Trees cause more pollution than automobiles do”. After this he also maintained that sulfur dioxide emitted from Mount St. Helens was greater than that emitted by cars over a 10-year period. In reality during one day, cars emit 40 times what Mount St. Helens released in a day even at its peak activity. Also in 1985 Reagan praised the P.W. Botha’s apartheid regime of South Africa for eliminating segregation. After this the then-Press Secretary Larry Speaks had to correct the statement a few days later (The Enduring Lies). When false statements have been made over and over it can become easy to question the trustworthiness of a leader. A leader should inspire trust by being trustworthy. Our book says that honesty refers to truthfulness and nondeception. The book goes on to say that “Honesty is absolutely essential to leadership. After all, if we are willing to follow someone, whether it be into battle or into the boardroom, we first want to assure ourselves that the person is worthy of our trust. We want to know that he or she is being truthful, ethical, and principled. We want to be fully confident in the integrity of our leaders” (Daft…

There are certain complexities in determining what way of thinking is “wrong” or “right”, and Carter states that questioning strongly held beliefs is a part of “...the most basic test of integrity”, where “The question is not whether his actions are consistent with what he most deeply believes but whether he has done the hard work of discerning whether what he most deeply believes it right.” What Carter means is that integrity requires reflection on personal principles and prejudices, and honesty does not. Because of this, even a person who always says what they think with total authenticity may lack integrity, which is an assertion I agree…

This declaration provoked controversy amongst many of the United States citizens and while the majority of the people supported McCain, there were still a select few of both the republican and democratic parties that were bewildered by his decision. They view Sarah Palin as ignorant and someone who could not play any significant part in running the United States government, and their scrutiny of her soon reached the public via television. Although entwined with humor, the Saturday Night Live vice Presidential debate clip is an example of the doubts society has on Palin’s experience.…

To emphasize and make true what he was saying, Chris Matthews used the example of George H. W. Bush. When the Persian Gulf War occurred, Bush used the support of his good friend Hosni Mubarek, who was the Egyptian president. Prior to this, when Bush was the vice president, the press secretary Peter Teeley was trying to look for him. He was then told that Bush was visiting the vice president of Egypt. Teeley had no clue who the vice president was, but Bush had a one-on-one relationship with none other than Mubarek. When Anwar Sadat died, suddenly, a person who no one knew became important. Mubarek was the new president of Egypt. Bush had no problem contacting him who helped to get the Arab league to put sanctions on Iraq. As shown, it is important to know everyone, because they might be important to you one day. Politicians who make the effort to know…
