Chris McCandless was a young man who lived a strange, adventurous life. I disagree with Krakauer, McCandless seems to be a crazy person. Chris’s craziness is clearly shown throughout the book. He managed to survive one-hundred and thirteen days in the wild, but in the end he did die. Chris McCandless went into the wild to escape corrupt society. He also did it because he fell in love with nature through his readings of books by authors such as Charles Dickens and Jack London. “He didn’t appear to be very old eighteen, maybe nineteen at most.” (Krakauer p.3) Jim Gallien had said this when he first saw Chris. Chris got so caught up in the books about nature that he felt it must be true. One of his favorite authors, Jack London, had barely even lived in the wild but Chris was to caught up in the fictional stories to realize that. He even chose epigraphs from his readings about the beauty and joy of nature. Even in his final goodbye notes he left quotes from authors he had read. He was about to die and he was still doing this, it shows you how crazy he was to get that caught up in his readings in the first place. Also a majority of what Chris had brought with him on his journey was books, instead of proper supplies or equipment that could have saved his life. Due to his sensitivity and craziness, Chris died. He was emaciated by the time his final days drew to a close. He should have just left the wild and came back to civilization, content with his adventure. Chris McCandless was a deep thinker and he lived his life accordingly, but he was somehow crazy enough to try to live in the wild unprepared. His poor decision ultimately led to his death. Chris was willing to abandon his loving family and not say a word to them just so he could go live by himself in nature. His actions were inconsiderate. It demonstrates how crazy Chris was since he was willing to do this, and pretty much get himself killed.
