Megan McArdle, the author of Walmart's Wage Experiment Works... for Workers, compares wage increases with different workforces at Walmart stores. McArdle provides the reader with ideas and questions like, "What happens if different stores did this?" and other questions relating to the effort needed to continue production if Walmart increased or the number of employees needed to fill the new workplaces. Claims like, "Paying higher wages has allowed Walmart to attract better workers, resulting in cleaner, nicer stores." Throughout the article, McArdle compares Costco's way of work with Walmart's and concludes that people living/working in rural(ish) areas generally make less money and have less workers, so "up"ing the wages would help those less…

In Neil Irwin’s article “How Did Walmart Get Cleaner Stores and Higher Sales,” there is discussion on whether or not Walmart’s corporate decisions to increase wages, offer better opportunities, and better training are an impact on the greater wealth of the economy. An experiment brought on by Walmart executives after noticing a significant decline in sales as well as store appearances. Irwin, who reports on economics for a living, put together an interesting article basically explaining how Walmart went from disgraceful looking stores to sales increasing and store appearances improving. Interesting that it only took them decades.…

Myspace.com is a SNS (social networking service) website which was founded in 2003. It was once the most visited social networking site in the world, and in June 2006 surpassed Google as the most visited website in the United States. It has been operating well with all its good features of music, games, videos and pop culture until early in 2008, when it was overtaken by Facebook in the number of unique worldwide visitors, and was surpassed in the number of unique U.S. visitors in May 2009. It had a significant influence in pop culture and music and created a gaming platform. Also, the site started the trend of creating unique URLS for companies and artists. With its once excellent performance and fame, Rupert Murdoch loved it very much, which led to the fact that Myspace was acquired by News Corporation in July 2005 for $580 million. However, since then with the poor managing strategies, wrong market positioning and News Corporation’s little help, the number of Myspace users has declined steadily in spite of several redesigns. After failure of changing top management for several times and leaving of its founders, Myspace was jointly purchased by Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake for approximately $35 million in June 2011.…

Wal-Mart Stores ended its 2009 fiscal year with nearly $266 billion in sales at its Wal-Mart Stores, $47 billion at Sam’s Club, and $99 billion in its international locations. This represented an increase a substantial portion of market share that presented a challenge for competitors. Yet Wal-Mart at the same time was challenged to move forward with intense competition from its rivals, Target and Costco. Target was a slightly higher end option for Wal-Mart stores, and Costco was a Sam’s Club competitor that rivaled the bulk retail center with its club membership and low wholesale pricing. In addition, there were challenges with its size creating issues with speed and response, as well as becoming more vulnerable from competitors because of its larger visibility in the market. Attacks by labor unions targeting Wal-Mart’s employees created challenges, corporate responsibility and environmental issues were coming to the forefront, and there were also issues with how to successfully expand into international markets.…

Walmart’s 2014 annual report differs from most other company’s annual reports; as most annual reports are targeted to shareholders or future investors, Walmart focuses its annual report on shareholders, associates, and customers. What is also unique about Walmart’s annual report is that it includes information and data of its subsidiary, Sam’s Club. In its 2014 annual report, Walmart uses many strategies to effectively communicate its current success and future goals to its investors, customers, and associates. First, Walmart’s annual report features affirmative language paired with photographs of happy associates emphasizing employee satisfaction and dedication to the company and to customers; second, the report uses infinitive verbs on page headers and titles to emphasize Walmart’s confidence in its current success and future goals; and third, Walmart demonstrates its accelerated growth through its innovative e-commerce integration by using bold images and quotes along with graphically highlighted facts.…
