Violence in Television Is One of the Major Reasons for the Escalating Crime Rate in Our Society
Violence in television is one of the major reasons for the escalating crime rate in our society. Violence is one of the causes of aggressive behaviour, crime, and violence. Television is one of the many factors that influence these types of behaviour. The youth of today watch television for long hours and it is hard to avoid television if you are a child, teen or adult. TV can affect kids' health, behaviour and family life in negative and positive ways. Children's cartoons today also contain all kinds of appalling violence. "The Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles" and "The Simpsons", MTV's "Beavis and Butthead" has become children's favourite. A major difference from the Disney cartoons of a generation ago, Beavis and Butthead usually torture animals, set fire to furniture and engage in all kinds of distasteful juvenile behaviour. Then there are horror movies. Many pre-teens today watch this type of movie at parties with their friends, hangouts and during the month of Halloween. Also there are music videos, many of which idealize violence, sexual assaults and murder. The link between violence on film and violence in our streets and homes is overwhelming. For example, many of America's most notorious serial killers, including Jeffrey L. Dahmer, were influenced by Hollywood films that graphically depict violence. Television also portrays certain topics rather blatantly when in fact these issues need to be dealt with care and sensitivity. Sex, substance abuse and other important issues are not handled with a great deal of maturity on television and this can end up giving out the wrong message. E.g.: A program portraying women as sex objects may end up giving the wrong message to youngsters. This may lead to sexual violence and domestic violence such as, Rape and a Husband verbally and physically abusing his wife. Everywhere we go we are surrounded by televisions, billboards, computer screens, magazines and newspapers. The media has a massive influence on society as a whole, but teens are impacted the most. Since human behavior is influenced by what an individual sees, the effect is greater at a younger age. Present day media has a detrimental effect on teenagers, especially pertaining to violence, sex, and the influence of alcohol and drugs. How many movies and cartoons on the television show that violence is okay, that violence resolves problems, that violence is funny? In 1952, the U.S. Senate held hearings to determine if media violence contributes to adolescent aggression. The answer now is clear: It can (Children). The average child sees 12,000 violent acts on television annually, including many depictions of murder and rape (Impacts). Studies show what exposure to watching too much television increases the risk that a child will be aggressive (James). In shows, perpetrators go unpunished 73% of the time (Media). Parents of young children need to understand that exposing their children to PG-13 and R-rated movies that contain a lot of violence can also be quite scary and produce anxiety (Children). Music is another huge problem involving the influence of sex. Lyrics in the past years have become more of a reference to sex, drugs, suicide, sexually transmitted diseases, ECT (Media). Teens struggling with any of those problems will be attracted to the music that expresses their feelings. It is not just song lyrics that can influence teens; it is also the music videos.
