“If you don’t speak up, people will take advantage of you”(Simon 43). This quote is the best definition of what life really is. In life if you do not speak for yourself, people will push you around and take advantage of you. If you want something done right in this world, you have to do it yourself. Depending on others is what others want, but that dependency will take over your life and it will become something that is not yours anymore. This quote is one of those rare things that I, personally, agree with one hundred percent. I watch people get pushed around everyday at out high school and that is only because people are afraid of speaking up for themselves. People who are shy and do not like speaking up are usually the ones who are not as successful and most likely to fail. Those people are the kinds of people that are called “losers” in our society. We live in a society that enjoys pushing others around—we live in a horrible society. There is nothing to do about that except for speaking up for your self.
For example I was at Best Buy today and there was a problem with my computer. I had guarantee on it but Best Buy refused to fix my computer. Instead of accepting what they did to me, I spoke up for myself. I fought for what I thought was right and I got what I deserved. They fixed my computer and I got the money I paid for the guarantee back and had one extra year added to my guarantee—no charge. This is the kind of society we live in, so people need to learn and speak up for themselves, otherwise they will get pushed around.

Your life is what you make it. In Ron Rash’s The World Made Straight, Lori and Dena are perfect examples of this statement. Both Lori and Dena realize that their lives are rough but they are different because Lori applies herself to everything she does and makes wise decisions because she is determined to strive for a better life. However, Dena’s actions show that she does not care about where her life will end up because she does not believe it can get any better.…

The person I was in the early ages had very low amounts of people to depend on for help, needing someone to talk to, and friends were all running low. Eventually, as the years passed I ran along a bunch of friends, new family members, I saw my soccer ball as a friend and not as an object, my family started to reunite once again, and then that special someone came along. The quote says, “That seems to be the way of things. Everyone takes, everyone gives. Life is like that.” at this point Siddhartha is talking to the merchant; apparently the merchant lives off of the goods of others and Siddhartha believes that is basically what life really is. The second quote I chose was written by Hesse, “You have chosen a splendid life…” this part of the book Siddhartha is talking to the Ferryman about how he chose a wonderful life living by the river. Furthermore, I chose this quote that represented me because I really do not regret anything I have done in order to be the person I am now; I love the life I live no matter what anybody says because I worked hard to be…

This quote interests me due to the fact that I had a lot of different opinions on roles of men and women than many of my peers at college as well. I grew up watching a man go to work, and contribute to the washing of the dishes and cooking. My Mother also worked and did some cooking and cleaning. In my household growing up everybody had equal responsibility in the household. The author’s message is that you shouldn’t judge anyone based on your enclosed beliefs on how society operates. The title of the passage is perfect due to the fact that it is exactly that that you can live your life by, or you can live your life without the thoughts carried in your head, and be open to every different experience with an open mind. That is like a man assuming that a woman should just be behind a stove because she is a…

Living is about making choices. The choices people make shape their lives for better or worse. Even the decision not to choose has its effects, often not wanted. But the individual who chooses to make positive choices and to act accordingly is more likely to see his or her life reflect his or her beliefs and desires. Usually the individual who chooses to take action is also willing to face the risks and obstacles that such choices involve.…

Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter”. He understood that although a person is breathing, he is not truly alive unless he is living for a purpose. A good life is one that is lived with the intention of constantly bettering oneself and the world in which they live. Unfortunately, this life can only be attained by making sacrifices. Time and independence are both expenses that must be paid in order to live a meaningful, and therefore good, life.…

Putting yourself before others is an important tactic that not many people demonstrate in their everyday lives. Many people rely on others to get them through things that they are very well capable of doing on their own, but they choose not to. To choose not to do something on your own is the idea of laziness at it’s finest. The reliance on oneself for improvement is an idea that can be expressed through an independent individual. In…

The statement has had a little influence on my life so far. I have not really witnessed this trait in real life. Even though I strongly believe in the fact that one person can make a difference, I don’t see it a lot. That’s why it hasn’t had a great impact on me. I also believe that there are only a few people in this world that have acquired this special quality. You have to be a great person to not give in into the pressure of numbers and firmly stand in what you believe in. This feature still helps me out in life when I face this challenge too. I think in my mind that to not give into other people’s opinions and to not give up on my idea. This sometimes makes me land on top and become the victor of the argument and sometimes it makes me look like a fool because of what I said. Either way…

The more we are standing up for ourselves the more self-confident and self-respect we gain. We all have the right to decide the way we want to live. When others dictate what we should think, feel and do, it eats away at our self-confidence. We begin to distrust our own instincts and lose the ability to decipher what we really believe versus what everyone wants us to believe. Furthermore, if we just follow others and don’t have the confidence to speak for us, we are living their dreams not ours.…

People are often mistreated because of their circumstances: not enough money, a different skin color, or contradictory ideas. I can use my rights and potentially beneficial standpoint to defend other people’s right to express their opinion, or even just enter the local grocery store without being scorned. I can speak up if I see a group of kids bullying or ostracizing another child because of their differences, and do what I can to make their day just a little bit better.…
