After that question, we attempted to lighten things up, so I asked her to describe herself to me in one word. Vicky labeled herself as a problem solver, and labels her common sense and ability to prioritize as her best traits that allow her to do her work diligently. Vicky’s prioritization is what stood out to me from the moment I began working with her, as in one morning she had to complete a presentation, reach out to three clients, meet with Carrey, the supervising attorney, and give me instructions within four hours. When I brought up this observation to Vicky, she said that she tries to “prioritize tasks and put into perspective that people’s lives are at stake. Real people”, but overall thinks she could grow in that area of her work. …show more content…
She first mentioned a man named Saher, who was her coworker at “AmeriCorps Refugee Resettlement Agency”, who pointed her in the right direction and recognized her passion for this work. She and Saher still do language access work in Jersey City together, and she credits him for helping her gain confidence within herself because of his belief in her ability to succeed in the field. The other two people Vicky brought up were Ellisa Steglich and Sarah Plastino, both who were responsible for getting her the position at KIND. Elissa is the managing attorney at AFSC Immigrant Rights program, who referred Vicky to the position at KIND because of the value Vicky added to AFSC in translating and connecting with clients. Sarah, the former supervising attorney for the KIND Newark office, hired Vicky based off of Elissa’s recommendation, despite her limited experience in working with kids. Vicky emphasized the importance of networking, highlighting that there is an enormous number of local advocates that are so inspirational. Vicky concluded this question by saying that it is a privilege to know and work with such amazing people, and advised me to begin networking now within the KIND office and all of the future firms/programs I may intern or work

    What I learned from the interview. There are some facts that I learned from interviewing Samuel. I could not imagine that someone as successful as Samuel, could have so much shame in his life. He has been living in the “closet” his whole life in order to be accepted by the Mexican society. It has been a process of adaptation and acceptance about his sexuality, I think the fact that Samuel agreed about the interview and disclosed his sexuality is a huge step for him. It was certainly a surprise for me when Samuel talked about his homophobic issues, he literally said that he cannot accept a gay who is feminist or a transgender. My thinking before the interview was that gay people feel more comfortable to hang out with gays because they can understand each other and do not feel judged.     With a strong interest in child welfare, there was no question that my interview with a social worker would involve someone who is involved in this area of practice. I did a small amount of internet research and discovered the All Nations Coordinated Response Network (ANCR) in Winnipeg. I discovered that within the Child and Family Services system this agency is generally the first point of contact. With an interest in front line work, I decided to make contact with this agency in hopes of scheduling an interview. I made a phone call to ANCR and spoke to a receptionist with the agency about what I was looking to accomplish.
