Samuel Interview Questions
What I learned from the interview. There are some facts that I learned from interviewing Samuel. I could not imagine that someone as successful as Samuel, could have so much shame in his life. He has been living in the “closet” his whole life in order to be accepted by the Mexican society. It has been a process of adaptation and acceptance about his sexuality, I think the fact that Samuel agreed about the interview and disclosed his sexuality is a huge step for him. It was certainly a surprise for me when Samuel talked about his homophobic issues, he literally said that he cannot accept a gay who is feminist or a transgender. My thinking before the interview was that gay people feel more comfortable to hang out with gays because they can understand each other and do not feel judged. The fact that Samuel discriminates and judges the LGBT community, made me reflect that we live in a society that criticizes, discriminates, and judges others, regardless if they are part of their same community, or different one. There is still a lot of work to do to stop discrimination in our society. We need to start treating people respectfully and equally, beginning with our own family, friends, coworkers, and then it will expand to our communities and the whole nation. I think spend more time with Samuel in a quieter environment. We met at a restaurant, we had to talk softly so people could not hear our conversation. It seems that Samuel had some things to share but the time was limited. Samuel and I decided to meet again to talk more about our culture and traditions. Even though the circumstances were not the most appropriate, Samuel shared very personal situations in his life. He asked for an advice regarding his lack of confidence about his sexuality, I provided some options that would help him, such as therapy. I think this is the beginning of a nice
