Veterans-Unspoken Heroes

Why are Veterans not integrating back into society with great success? Have you ever wondered what happens to Veterans once they return back from the war or from serving a tour of duty? How has their family survived without them while they were gone and what was their experience like without their loved one? In the following paragraphs you will read about the transitions that Veterans as well as their families have integrating back into the community, work, church, school and family life upon returning from serving a tour of duty. It is astounding how much assistance is provided to Veterans but sadly very few of them actually use the assistance provided to them which is what we will focus on in the next paragraphs.
There are hundreds of thousands of troops deployed right now in Afghanistan and Iraq fighting on behalf of our government and our country http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2011/06/22/world/asia/american-forces-in-afghanistan-and-iraq.html). Currently there isn’t an active war but we are fighting a battle. If and when a war beings our solders/veterans are asked to leave at moment’s notice to fight in a war or handle a crisis/disaster in our country. Their lives are constantly being placed in harm’s way for our safety. The question we should ask ourselves is how can we better support our veterans?
Studies have shown that Veterans aren’t integrating back into society successfully (www.veteranscouncil.org). In the midst of serving in wars, handling disasters across the country and holding onto a family from afar the last thing that should happen in a Veterans life should be the thought that they would return home and have all the pieces fall apart. There are a lot of resources available for Veterans upon their return from being deployed. The resources are available in mass numbers in all areas of their life but why are there still so many that have issues integrating back into society?
How can we better educate

At Cacciutti Veteran Educational Foundation, our belief is that our discharged veterans deserve added consideration when obtaining gainful education and employment opportunities to be able to support themselves, along with proper medical care, both physical and psychological, to help the veteran assimilate into civilian life. Cacciutti Veteran Educational Foundation has noticed the lack of capable, skilled workers to take over for those who are exiting their respective fields, along with the rising unemployment rate and psychological problems of returning combat veterans like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as the problems that even non-combat veterans have assimilating back into civilian society. So Cacciutti Veteran Educational…

In her article Sørensen writes that “…veterans have all experienced and come to appreciate the confidence, loyalty, solidarity, and support that the collective offers. When faced with the challenges of reintegration into civilian life, they mimic their past and establish veteran communities around, for instance, political agendas, hobbies, and interests” (239). This can be seen when a group of veterans support their fellow Corporal after they return home and find that his wife had abandoned him. One of them recalled “We had somebody with him the whole weekend until we were sure he was good” (Klay 10). This support from a group of veterans shows that the comradery created from being in a war together can be very important for times when veterans cannot connect with society or their loved ones. Even though these vets had their own lives with loved ones to reconnect to, they immediately reached out to their fellow vet who had lost someone he cared for. This support shows that society may not understand how to help soldiers integrate back into a non-military lifestyle and sometimes other vets are needed to provide this support…

It is important to keep honoring our veterans because they have sacrificed so much for this country. Also we honor them because we need to tell them how appreciative we are of their dutiful service to our country. Even the president honors our veterans. Each year the president or one of his representatives lays a wreath on The Tomb of The Unknown Soldiers in the Arlington Cemetery every Veterans Day to honor those veterans. Even though the first unknown soldier was laid to rest there on Armistice day on the year of 1921 this ceremony still continues. This is one way that shows just how important honoring our veterans…

Non-Profit Assistance for the Disabled Veteran is important for two reasons. First, most veterans who return home after military service will not take advantage of their benefits. These benefits could assist them to better their quality of life. Second, veterans are in a position to start non-profit organizations with their Small Business Administration loans from the Veterans Administration. These Non-profit organizations will hopefully help many of our homeless and disabled veterans.…

Vietnam veterans returned home in 1975 to a less than supportive Australia. They were seen as ‘murderers’, no parades were held for them, they were met with contempt rather than gratitude. This, coupled with the trauma of war, Vietnam veterans suffered untreated psychological problems. They felt guilty because they ‘let the South Vietnamese people down’ and the sight of civilians killed in crossfire caused them to be plagued by bad dreams. They developed anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder and found it hard to settle back into daily life. This spilled over into their domestic life, with divorce rates higher than average and 38% reported that their marriage failed within 6 months of returning home. Suicide rates were also higher than average, almost 20- 25 % higher than the Australian average. The psychological impact of the traumas of war had a negative effect on their children, who were 3 times more likely to commit suicide than the general Australian population. Even with the obvious psychological and social problems being experienced by veterans, the government did little to help until after 1983.…

It is true that veterans are the heroes of this country yet receive the least attention to their health. There should be a change in the government; before anyone is deployed out of the country to fight a war, he or she should be given a free house for them self or family. This is just from my observation. However, veterans always return home from deployment with some form of injury it could be physical, mental or emotional that is why nurse need to advocate for them. Health care is the next phase in a veteran’s life after they come back from war. It is important for the veterans to be treated as soon as possible for a better out com. As explained in Shiner (2012) Veterans needed to assess and treated immediately they return from a war…

Without a source of money the veterans will eventually run out of money, and end up on the streets homeless. These veterans who have gone down the rabbit hole may decide to turn to the government for help. When the veterans come to the shelters that the government provided the shelters are often unsanitary and dangerous due to how most people in the shelter struggle with substance abuse. This makes the streets a more welcoming place as it is safer than the…

There is so much we can do to provide homes for these Veterans. We can stop sending money to other countries and we can use that money to take care of them. Why is it that we take care of people in other countries when we should be taking care of the people in our country? Yes I know that we get a whole bunch of stuff from other countries that we use in our everyday lives. But that is called business. We cannot just give money to people that need it in other countries when we need it here. Why would we do that? It is anarchy…. It makes no sense.…

I think American veterans should be honored for several key reasons. The first and foremost reason is that these brave men and women risked ther lives for the freedom of the United States, or even for the freedom of a country half way around the world, which they knew nothing about. Either way these soilders fought for freedom, and each one should be honored one way or another. Another reason veterans should be commended is because we never want to repeat the time when Vietnam war veterans came back to the states. They were treated terribly. They were spit on, objects were thrown at them, they were denied of jobs by people who resented the war, etc. Yet another reason is that these people fight so the rest of us don't have to. These people also keep the wars over seas, so us citizens can sleep safely at night. Also, some soilders see some really traumatizing things. Either seeing their buddies die right in front of them. Anyone who has seen Saving Private Ryan has a pretty good idea of what some soilders witness.…

American veterans served our country, sacrificed their lives for our freedom, and gave Americans all of the astonishing rights and freedom that we appreciate and enjoy today. Ronald Reagan once said, “Freedom is the right to question and change the established way of doing things.” Thanks to American veterans, we are able to have that right and many other rights that they have earned for us. Some people may say money, or shelter is the most important thing in the world. Honestly, it is the American veterans because we wouldn’t have all of the amazing things in the world if it wasn’t for them. American Veterans are the “apple of the eye” of America for their bravery and heart, for serving in the military and risking their lives for our freedom.…
