In the article “Vandalized by Speech” by Gregory Rodriguez, he claims that hate speech is form of vandalism. He compares the subject to a broken window; if left untended, it signals people to do more damage. Rodriguez states that any discussion of the subject leads to the invocation of the 1st Amendment. He goes on to say that hate speech is a threat to our democracy and society, and it should be regulated. Additionally, Rodriguez argues that hate speech is making appearances everyone from political campaigns to college pep bands. It is hard to go one day without seeing some form of hate speech. I see examples of it on social media platforms on a daily basis. People do not think about the negative effects that occurs because of what they said. Moreover, the people who face hate speech may feel angered or frustrated enough that they, too, perpetuate hate speech. People do not care to listen to those who claim hate speech is an issue because they think that the 1st Amendment gives them the right to say anything they want without consequences. The freedom of speech does not mean that you should say negative things to those of a different race or religion.
Hate speech is also occurring in politics. Instead of sharing their views and debated key topics, many politicians just want to criticize his or her opponent based on their religious views, ethnic background, or opinions. Donald Trump is a recent example of hate speech in politics. He has called Mexicans drug dealers and rapists, and he has even accused all of them being murderers. This negatively affects voting because people may not want to vote at all if one candidate is perpetuating hate speech and the other has views that he or she disagrees
