The VARK questionnaire is a tool used to identify ones preferred method of learning. The author of this paper has completed this questionnaire in order for her preferred learning style to be determined. Based on the results, the author has been determined to be multimodal, which means the author has multiple preferences when it comes to learning styles. According to Fleming (2011a), approximately 60% of any population has this same learning style preference. Some of the strategies for taking in information include making lists, taking notes which are often verbatim, referring to reference material such as dictionaries, manuals, and websites and receiving handouts to read (Fleming, 2011b). An example of applying these strategies would be in a classroom setting. While the author is listening to the lecture, she is also taking notes to review at a later time. Making lists has become a daily part of life for this author as it is a way of organizing information. While strategies from the read/write learning style appeared to be effective for this author, evaluating the need to use strategies from the other learning styles would be a necessary change to determine greater success. Choosing to use strategies from the different learning styles based on the situation would be ideal. For example, using flow charts or graphs when needing to compare numbers, might be a helpful way to retain the information for future use.
