The utilization of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) can be a prominent tool in regards to project management for product development.
In order to marry the two concepts of project management and UML, understanding these terms is vital. Project management is the role performed by a project manager to analyze the scope of a project in order to plan out, organize, and control resources to meet specific goals of a project with time-constraints and resource constraints as critical factors to consider. Just like the blueprints of a building, UML in the other hand is an object-oriented modeling language that is designed to be utilized for software engineering to be able to model and visualize the layout of a system before the final product. The standardization of UML permits it to be a prominent modeling tool.
Project Managers are faced with many daunting challenges throughout the course of their projects. Two of the major tasks that are required by project managers is fully understanding the requirements and how to communicate those requirements in an effective manner to all involved parties, whether it be team members or upper management. Understanding the requirements permit for the scope of the project to be actualized fully for proper implementation of time and resources to complete a project. Unstable and/or inadequate requirements are a challenge that project managers strive to avoid. Additionally, making sure that everyone in the team understands the scope, requirements, schedule, and bigger picture is also important to keep on track and avoid communication mishaps –Inadequate client communication and poor team communication are top offenders. Project managers should also strive to avoid needless complexity and ineffective team activities. This is hard to do since

    A project management life cycle (PMLC) model is a sequence that is made up by the five process groups - Scoping, Planning, Launching, Monitoring & Control and Closing, and it’s used for achieving the goal of a project. In handling a project using a PMLC model, the entire process group must be present at least once in a sequence, and any or all of the process groups, may be repeated as required (Wysocki, 2009:299). To be analysed comparatively here are two different type of PMLC model- Adaptive PMLC model and Extreme PMLC model. An Adaptive PMLC model is an Agile Project Management (APM) model which consists of a number of phases that are repeated in cycles between the scoping and closing process groups, with a feedback loop after each cycle is completed. The sequence is: Plan cycle> Launch cycle>Monitor & Control cycle > Close cycle > Next cycle. Here, each cycle proceeds based on an incomplete and limited understanding of the solution. Extreme PMLC model consist of a sequence of repeated phases with each phase based on a very limited understanding of the goal and solution of a project. The sequence: Scope phase >Plan phase > Launch phase > Monitor & Control phase > Close phase > Next phase, is repeated severally in search of both goal and solution until client is satisfied or the budget or time is out.
