With cities being “landscaped for human convenience” (127), it is no wonder that people are forgetting about the importance of nature. Suzuki argues that the urbanization of cities will lead to society “[losing their] sense of connection with nature” (127). This point depicts the problem of modern society, and Suzuki puts forward the possible consequences that can occur in the future. The fact that parents are raising their children to believe that “nature is an enemy” (128) shows the gradual changes in…
First of all, trees are beautiful. If you have been over to Bedford Park or have taken a drive along the highway, the situation there looks pretty bad. During the past ten years, our town has grown. Trees have been cut down to make room for houses and office buildings. Shopping centers and new roads too. We and our families need a park where we can relax, play, and picnic. For us to breathe, we need trees secondly. If you plant more trees, you will have more oxygen. Trees turn carbon…
The beautiful scenery of American suburbs persuades us that suburbs are cleaner than cities. Since greenery is more visually attractive than brownness filled with mobs of people and congestion, this claim must be true. Well, is it? Edward Glaeser and David Owen attempt to bust this myth through their works, Triumph of the City and Green Metropolis. They defy the myth and claim that suburbs are actually main culprits for increased carbon footprints in the United States. They attempt to provide compelling arguments of why and how cities are much more energy sufficient than suburbs. I support their ideas, because I also believe we can protect the environment more effectively in close proximity than wide sprawl from my own experiences of living in both Chicago and its northwest suburb. Urban lifestyle is a key to conservation. We must make necessary efforts to accept this counterintuitive fact and ultimately bring ourselves back to cities to sustain our planet earth.…
While reading into this I was surprised to see that contrary to popular belief large urban areas are positive for the environment. Cities are known for a lack of plant life and trees, but however are reducing mankind’s environmental footprint on our planet. Johnson uses one example of waste management, in a Portland Oregon, 500,000 residents require only 2 large septic tanks connected by 2,000 miles of pipes. By comparison a rural population can be using over a 100,000 separate septic tanks, with over 7,000 miles of pipes. The point being that the more spread out a population is the more resources are used to sustain life. Statistics from the book show how urbanization is an upward trend, by 2030 experts its predicted that over 60% of the world’s population is going to be living in an urban area.…
Central Park is one of Winnipeg, Manitoba’s oldest urban parks which was developed in 1893 after the City of Winnipeg acquired it from The Hudson Bay Company for $10,000 cash and $10,000 debentures. Prominent residents developed ornate homes, as seen in Figure 1, apartments and cottages around the 3.5 acre irregularly shaped park which is located on Qu’Appelle Avenue between Edmonton Street and Carlton Street.…
Have you ever wondered what our city looked like before we, humans, came and built this lovely urban setting that we know as Toronto? Or, how we completely destroyed the homes of other forms of life to build a perfectly groomed and landscaped urban setting for human life? One that does not have a place for the other forms of life I agree with David Suzuki that we humans seem to think that we are special and above nature which has led to the creation of many environmental problems today.…
I been living in the Redwood National and State Parks for my whole life, and I’m going to stay here for the rest of it too, but it’s not been boring at all. I’m the highest redwood tree in the forest, standing 379.7 feet tall. I have big, thick branches with abundant leaves at the end, and I am one of the most visited trees in the forest because of my impressive height. I remember that when I was growing up, I could see more people come and visit the park than what I see this day. This may not be a problem now, but it may lead to a big problem because if fewer people keep coming, fewer people will take care of nature, which that may lead into many bigger problems.…
It is said, that forests cover 31% of the land area on our planet (WWF). Reducing the number of trees and the surface area of a forest is called deforestation. Deforestation is one of the biggest problems in today’s economic system. There may be a lot of positives behind the idea of cutting down trees; however they are all outnumbered by the negatives. If one is not careful with the removal of a forest, it may lead to more deserted areas.…
This is an area of high employment with a growing population that does not show signs of slowing down. Unfortunately, the growth has resulted in the urban sprawl of cities. Suburban and industrial development spreads past the periphery of communities, consuming green space and agricultural space. Recently, the Ontario government has taken steps to reduce and redirect this growth in a more structured way. This study compares past government policies with recent legislation designed to protect environmentally sensitive areas and encourage smart…
Sometimes, you can get a better price for forest products if you can show they were produced sustainably. But the most important part of a sustainable forest management plan is that it helps local people work together to use and protect forests. How to use and protect the forest at the same time is a good question here are my ideas? Tree thinning this will help by allowing the more sunlight in the forest so the plants you want can grow. Selective logging which means cutting only some trees , while saving young trees and some healthy older trees to hold soil and provide seed for the future. Planting green space in smaller areas of trees in places where most trees have been cut down, or where the forest is completely gone, is a way to improve the soil, water, and air even in populated cities and towns. Last but not least you can support natural regrowth will help the forest by limiting the use of areas where too many trees have been…
Each year, EarthCorps leads thousands of volunteers in environmental service projects in Western Washington. They work with schools, businesses, nonprofits, government agencies and ultimately the community to work together towards a venture called the Green Seattle Partnership. The objective of this partnership was to “promote a livable city by re-establishing and maintaining a healthy urban forest” (Weaver 20). EarthCorps is a non-profit organization that is actively engaged in this partnership to restore key ecological sites around the Puget Sound Region. Their restoration projects of re-establishing polluted or degraded environment to a possible thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem is critical in the rebuilding of a functioning natural ecosystem. It allows the return of native plant and animal species to thrive and allow the ecosystem to flourish. However due to the increasing demand of human interference such as “view clearing, logging and passive management” (Weaver 12), these activities has led to much pollution, overdevelopment and the loss of natural habitats for many native environmental species.…
Reiterated Thesis Statement: So to reiterate what I just said: planting trees will benefit the world greatly as it will create habitat for living beings for the ones who lost homes, give off oxygen to life and sustain the necessary water.…
Deforestation is an ongoing issue throughout the world. To this date, we have lost more than 75 percent of the forests on Earth. Deforestation is the clearing of forests to make way for new, non-forest land uses, such as urban development or agriculture, transforming a forest into cleared land (“Deforestation and Afforestation”). When thinking about deforestation, the first place that comes in anyone’s mind is Brazil, because that is where the Amazon rainforest is located and it was once known to have the highest deforestation rate in the world. However, Canada, which accounts for “10 percent of the world’s forests…now accounts for 21 percent of all deforestation in the world” (Okolo). Due…
The great shade trees stretch over three city blocks, which is a good thing for the city’s overall health.…
In paragraph 4, Thomas mentioned that trees provide a vital counterbalance to the perceived debilitating impact cities have on the environment. I agree to this observation. Trees and plants naturally filter the air as well as water of pollutants, thus effectively cleaning…
