University Colloquium Service Learning Proposal
1. Where are you planning to do your service learning? Be specific and list for what organization or event(s) you will be working. Account for the full ten hours.
I am planning to do my service learning at CREW Land and Water Trust. I am going to be helping them with two fundraising events, one on January 28th and one on February 18th. These two events will account for, at least, 5 hours total, but may end up being more than that. The other 5 hours will be put towards trail clean-ups, but I am waiting on specific trail clean-up dates from Jessi Drummond.

They oversee about 60,000 acres of watershed, along with the South Florida Water Management District and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission. CREW’s part is to coordinate the acquisition of land, management of it, and public use of the space. They actually try to buy up land to preserve it, so that it isn’t developed on. They’re basically working to prevent urban sprawl from consuming the Corkscrew area, and the natural habitat there. As in a Land Remembered, when Sol MacIvey is driving to Punta Gorda and is disgusted by the development he sees, that he was a part of, CREW is working to prevent this. CREW members/employees are self-proclaimed conservationists, and much like Toby seem to be aghast by the dwindling forest and Everglades

Hotel accommodations will be located a short five minute walk from the training site to make things more convenient. Breakfast will be catered and will be open at the riverside life arts building at 9 a.m. before training begins. We think this approach is the best so everyone can learn on a full stomach. This will also give everyone some time to sit and talk with our development team. There will also be a catered lunch directly fallowing training sessions each day. This is to insure that all training was understood by all who attend. If anyone is unsure of proper training please let a team leader know so that a one on one session can be scheduled to fully clarify training of the new system. Each day of training will be approximately five hours in length and we will cover training, questions, and answers.…

My chapter of Alpha Phi Omega is Alpha Beta Zeta, located at Radford University. Each member is required to get 35 community service hours each semester. Service projects occur around the New River Valley and help a variety of community organizations. Because Alpha Phi Omega has a partnership with the Boy Scouts of America, we host many projects that allow us to help them facilitate big events. Projects I have worked on include: cleaning a local daycare center, performing trail maintenance along a portion of the Appalachian Trail, collecting food for Meals on Wheels, raising money for different causes, running youth programs for Boy Scouts and 4-H events, cleaning our Adopt-A-Spot, beautifying local parks, and many other programs. Over the…

In order to concisely put my view of how service should be executed is as Ernesto Sirolli summed up in his Ted Talk , “Shut up and Listen”. In order to truly serve a person must know what the community needs and then figure out how to best provide it. Doing otherwise I believe is imposing yourself or your group on another that you feel is lesser than me. And it's not going to be that successful but rather a hassle for the community. Change and service comes in many shapes and sizes, they can be direct and hands on or indirect. A “good” or “meaningful” service experience may not be going to another country to build houses for week when you have no more experience than creating buildings with your Lego set. Sometimes it's helping cut vegetables at the soup kitchen because it is understaffed or providing the funds for the community to help…
