Unit Outcomes & Evidence
Unit 501 (SHC51)

Outcome 1.1: How do you review the range of individuals and groups in your workplace whose communication needs must be addressed?

As an assistant manager I have a responsibility to my residents, to accommodate, and provide support for all residents, and their individual communication needs. By performing assessments with individual residents, I am able to understand the problems they have with communication, and actions and aids we can supply, to enable them to communicate effectively. In assessing communication needs, I need to consider each individual, and cater for the individual’s needs. I need to consider ‘groups’ of individuals, for instance males/females, foreign speaking users, deaf/Blind users etc. The actions and aids we supply for communication needs should benefit not just the individual, but the group of service users as a whole, and encourage interaction, inclusion, and social contacts. Regular reviews should be performed to ensure individual needs are being met and I do this during my 3 monthly care plan reviews.

Outcome 1.2: Explain how you support effective communication within your job role

To support effective communication within my job role I encourage the staff and clients to discuss any concerns or suggestions they may have to improve the care and service we provide. This Is done through supervisions/appraisals and we also give the staff the opportunity to make suggestions in our staff meetings. Staff are encouraged to put any points they would like to raise in writing and hand to myself or the manager for team discussion at the meeting. Our clients have the opportunity to raise any issues or concerns at the resident meetings that are held every two months, and also via their

I communicate on a daily basis with residents while delivering care, for example I always ask about their well being on a daily basis before assisting or helping them on any tasks as their well being is very important to the way they react or respond to situations. For example a resident who is feeling poorly and discomfort may not be able to carry out certain tasks as they used to do, hence finding out about their physical/emotional well being is very vital.…

In my role, it is important that I can communicate in the correct way to ensure that the needs of the service user are understood and are dealt with correctly. Effective written and verbal communication and being able to use a variety of interpersonal techniques helps to promote strong working relationships and will promote good quality care for the service user. For example when I meet a service user on the initial visit we discuss their needs and wishes to ensure they receive the appropriate care and support package that is individually tailored to meet there needs. I hold regular review meetings with the service user, the key worker, family members and other professionals to establish any changing needs. I contact the service user regularly by telephone to ensure that everything is working well with the service. I also hold regular staff meetings and one to one meetings to ensure effective open communication between the office and the staff on duty. This enables staff to raise any concerns that they may have and for actions to be implemented to reduce or eliminate the concern. I produce reports, update…

In my opinion this is why communication is playing a big role in the organization because without communication amongst employees as well as supervisors this could lead the company to become unsuccessful and fail. Effective communication can be important when dealing with vulnerable people such as the elderly or people with impairments. Effective communication can be important for three main reasons: Prevention, Empowerment and because we deal with people with impairments we can also look at what we can do as individuals to make sure we communicate more effectively with vulnerable people. Effective communication is essential in preventing things such as elder abuse, loneliness and depression. It allows us to develop relationships with residents and their families. Communication is a big factor within the workplace. Without effective communication within the workers, clinical misconception may occur and the patients’ health could be at stake. Building good relationships with residents allows them to gain trust in us and therefore talk to us if they have any issues. It is important that as individuals we are able to recognize the signs of abuse, loneliness and depression, from the person’s body language or tone of voice and should such issues arise that we can use our own Active Listening Skills such as Paraphrasing, Reflecting, Summarizing, Questioning and Focusing to communicate effectively with the person. Good communication improves people’s lives and empowers them which mean that they have more control over what happens to them.…
