Unit 4 English Assignment
For boys who have passed by or through the Middle School this week you will have noticed that the precinct was awash with the colour orange in the form of balloons and banners. The boys in Year 8 will, I hope, be able to tell you that this display of orange was to mark Harmony Day, an event organised by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. It is aimed at celebrating our cultural diversity and promoting tolerance and respect for racial difference.
The theme for Harmony Day in 2011 is ‘Everyone Belongs’, promoting the idea that all Australians form an important part of our country, regardless of their background. Harmony Day is a time to reflect on where Australia has come from, as well as a time to recognise the traditional owners

Furthermore, almost 50 percent of our 22 million people were either born overseas, or had one or both parents born overseas. The tangible effects of Australia having this incredible multi-cultural society are obvious. On a daily basis we are reminded of the unquestionable benefits that flow from the rich ethnic blend that now makes up our society. It is undeniable that the linguistic, cultural and social connections that come from being a multicultural society provide vast economic benefits and support the development of prosperous international business links. Also, one need only look at the incredible diversity in cuisine we enjoy, the range of furnishings from other countries with which we decorate our homes, and even the different customs many of us weave into our own lives, to see the vibrant impact that such rich ethnic diversity has on all of our lives. On the whole Australians are tolerant of these different cultural influences, in fact most of us embrace them willingly and enjoy the …show more content…
Respect by its very definition embraces tolerance. True respect for others involves acceptance of difference. I am sure that you will also agree that tolerance is a core leadership characteristic. Great leaders demonstrate understanding and embrace diversity – turning it into a strength, and building unity from that diversity.
In a school that has a proud tradition of scholarly excellence, having produced some of the country’s great thinkers and leaders, I put it to you that we are courageous enough, proud enough and confident enough to engage in such conversations and be prepared to examine what it looks like and feels like to be in the ethnic minority and be a member of our community.
I actually do believe that we are, on the whole a tolerant school that operates mainly at a higher level of tolerance. I think we do challenge stereotypes and we do genuinely embrace diversity. In making my assessment I can only use the personal barometer I work with every day. It is part of my job to work with boys who have made wrong choices. Of the matters I’ve dealt with over the years I can honestly say that it is not very often that it has involved racial slurs or acts of prejudice. I’m not saying that it doesn’t occur – I know it does but I don’t believe it is not endemic in our school

Throughout the semester, the Year Eight class have studied figurative language, Shakespeare, persuasive and narrative writing, as well as reviewing the role punctuation plays in ensuring clarity in writing. Chloe is a very friendly and capable student who has consistently produced work of a solid Year Eight standard. She can sometime allow herself to be distracted in class, this means that she often runs out of time to effectively edit her work. As a result of this she sometimes misses punctuation and grammatical errors that could have easily been corrected. In order to improve, Chloe will need to re-evaluate her use of class time to ensure that she leaves herself enough time to carefully edit all tasks before she submits them. I wish her all the best for next year.…

    Australian Identity

Australian identity refers to how a country is depicted as a whole whilst encompassing its culture, traditions, language and politics. Australia is the smallest, youngest continent with the lowest population density, which often struggles to define its national identity. As Australia originates from British descent, it lacks originality in culture and heritage. One aspect as portrayed by Tim Winton in his narrative style article Tide of Joy is an Australian identity revolving around summer by the sea with family. Danny Katz emphasises the difference between those considered ‘worthy’ of celebrating Australia Day and those that do not meet the criteria in his editorial Aussie, Aussie, Aussie? No, No, No. These two texts help to define the open-ended question of, ‘How do we define Australian identity?’ However, the texts both represent a narrow range of individuals in Australian society and therefore by reading these two texts alone, it is a rather biased view of the Australian stereotype.…

The feature article, “A Multicultural Celebration” by Australian radio host, Paul Murray presents a meandering critique Australia’s multicultural history and our search for a national identity. Whilst I agree with the picture that he paints of the constant cycle of opposition to the various waves of migrant types throughout our history, and how he shows that despite this, multiculturalism flourishes, I disagree with how Murray tries to tie this with our search for a national identity. In this article the Australian citizen who searches for a national identity is silenced by Murray’s dismissal of the search as, ‘navel-gazing’. He goes on to say the search is futile. He seeks to supplant the values built up by generations of Australians of ‘egalitarianism’, ‘mateship’ and ‘freedom’ with his own notion that we be defined by multiculturalism alone. Murray uses a photographic montage, a main body and a concluding statement to persuade us that for over a century we have been looking in the wrong place for our national identity, and that we should, like “America”, define ourselves by multiculturalism. I think Murray fails to win the argument. What the article should have done is show us how multiculturalism can define us. It should permit us one day of the year to ‘navel-gaze’, or reflect on who we are and why must it be either multiculturalism or the three values stated previously, egalitarianism, mateship and freedom, why not all four?…

Waking up this morning, the bright spring sunshine shone through my window. In less than an hour, I was ready for school and heading towards the bus stop. Walking in the direction of the main road, I caught a glimpse of my bus and hurriedly increased my walking speed. Feeling triumphant about catching the bus, I dug my hand in my blazer pocket and fetched my oyster card. The triple beep of my oyster card embarrassed me, but I took no notice and strolled into the bus. I fixed my eyes on a comfortable-looking seat, and I was heading there when a young man holding a notepad stopped me. He considerately asked to see my oyster card, and that moment I comprehended he was a ticket inspector.…
