Waking up this morning, the bright spring sunshine shone through my window. In less than an hour, I was ready for school and heading towards the bus stop. Walking in the direction of the main road, I caught a glimpse of my bus and hurriedly increased my walking speed. Feeling triumphant about catching the bus, I dug my hand in my blazer pocket and fetched my oyster card. The triple beep of my oyster card embarrassed me, but I took no notice and strolled into the bus. I fixed my eyes on a comfortable-looking seat, and I was heading there when a young man holding a notepad stopped me. He considerately asked to see my oyster card, and that moment I comprehended he was a ticket inspector.
Unwillingly handing him my oyster card, he suspiciously looked at it, then back at me. In that split of a second, I realised my photo was completely scratched off, which I predicted was the reason why he gave me an unusual look. “Did you do this?” he asked curiously. I responded with a yes, trying really hard to imprison my laughter. Putting my oyster card carefully into his waist bag, he handed me the notepad he was holding and asked me to write down my details whilst explaining to me solemnly that it’s not allowed to use an oyster card in that state.
Wishing I had invisible fingers to block my ears, I ineffectively tried to think of something funny to distract me. Since I was in such a careless mood and was running late for school, I nodded at whatever the inspector said and agreed not to scratch off the photo on my oyster card again. In return, he gave me a temporary travel card for the day and provided me with advice on how to obtain a replacement. I thanked him with a fake smile and paced off the bus lividly. Feeling rather disappointed about my oyster card being withdrawn, I was thinking about something to put me back into the mood for the day.
As I was walking towards my school, my stomach churned and I realised how hungry I was just before I detected a perfect corner

But on this particular night, a humid night at that, there was absolutely no sound to be heard. Not even the squeal of a tyre edging around the street corner, or the cackle of an old man passing by. Feeling the aching in my wrists turn to a sharp pain, I peered down at the several plastic bags that I was holding; full of the essential shopping that I had gone out to get last minute for dinner. One of the bags (the one that was hurting my wrists) was clearly overfilled, but I couldn’t do anything about that, not now, in the middle of the street. Letting out a heavy sigh, I carried on walking, reaching carelessly into my pocket to clasp my phone. In the humidity, it felt lovely to have the cold, metal block against my hands. I pulled it out, feeling around in the darkness around me for the switch to turn it on with. I paused, under a spot in which the moonlight was beaming down upon on the road. Underneath the only source of light in the pitch black city, I checked my phone for any messages or calls that we important. There was nothing, apart from one message from my sister telling me to buy her some magazines. I hadn’t and since I had already come out of the shop and had begun my walk home, I wasn’t going to go back just for her sake. Feeling even hungrier as the time sped past, I decided that it would probably just be better to go home so that I could eat as quickly as possible. My stomach however, had other ideas. The loud rumble that came from deep inside it, suggested that I should eat preferably sooner rather than later. Ignoring it, I crouched down and scooped up my plastic shopping…

Imagine being in the Bart train, going to a party with some of your friends, but while in route, you are shot by the Bart police for a crime you did not commit. This is the story of a young man named Oscar Grant. On New Years Eve of 2009, he was fatally shot. . Police brutality is the use of excessive force, physically or verbally, by a police officer. In one year, how many incidents of police brutality or misconduct do you think have occurred? In the U.S. alone, statistics show that over 2,500 incidents have occurred. Because of the constant stories of severe police brutality, it is clear that the efforts to stop this are not effective. …

    Breaking a Social Norm

For my breaking a social norm, my friends and I wanted to do something creative that no one in my class would do. So in a couple of minutes of thinking we figure something creative. Our plan was to go to McDonalds and use the drive thru to order our order, but the catch is that I was supposed to walk to the drive thru with no car just me standing there ordering my order and when they said to pull up to the next widow I would just walk to the window and pay and walk to the other window to get my order. We did this after the homecoming dance around like 10:40. So I basically I got of the car I started walking to the drive thru and I was basically stuck in traffic. I got behind this black ford SUV and I waited for my turn. So finally it was my turn and I order everything on the dollar menu. But my friends also told me to say “god damn!” while I order something. So I sounded like this “can I get a goddamn McChicken” So the guy said please drive up to the next window and I started walking. When I got there you should’ve seen his reaction like he was expecting a car not a guy walking to the drive thru. He didn’t say anything he just gave me change back and I started walking to the next window to pick up my order.…

A woman walks through a busy train station to catch her train. As she is in a hurry a well-dressed black man bumps into her, knocking the contents of her purse on the ground. She quickly starts to grab up her things refusing the man’s help, stating “You’re making me miss my train” (Davidson, 1989). She hurryingly runs after her train missing it as it pulls out of the station. The woman then starts searching through her bags looking for her wallet, only to realize it is missing. The woman goes back to the spot where her purse spilt on the floor, but no wallet is to be seen. A homeless man then walks in front of her talking and laughing. She then goes to a diner and grabs a salad to eat. While asking how much the salad cost she informs the worker she may not have enough to pay for it. She grabs her salad and sits down (cleaning the table) to eat it realizing she forgot to grab a fork. When the woman walks back from getting her fork she notices a black man seemingly homeless eating her salad. She argues with the man about eating her salad to which he laughs at her. The woman then goes to grab for her plate, the man slams his fist and yells at her, startling her. She sits there staring at him eat her salad, when she picks up her fork and takes a piece for herself, while the man does the same. The man then gets up returning with two cups of coffee. He offers the woman sugar to which she politely refuses. He then offers her a packet from his pocket (to which she politely accepts) as she…

The afternoon was cold and windy as I walked through the shopping centre of my little suburb. A busker, perhaps in his late fifties, wearing clothes that had gone well beyond their 'use by' date, played his guitar rather badly. "Don't encourage him!" called a passer by as I dropped a coin into the box. I crossed the road and entered a shop where I made regular purchases. I noticed the assistant would occasionally look out of the window at the busker. She turned to me and asked, "Would you mind the shop for a minute?" Surprised, I agreed, whereupon she took a pie from the warmer, ran across the road, and gave it to the busker. I have since learned that this was not an isolated example of her generosity.…

Accidents happen all the time, to anyone and everyone. Sometimes we accidently run into someone on the street, and other times it’s a little more serious. On one particularly gray and gloomy day a mere fraction of moments lead to events with tragic consequences. It involved a car border line illegal with balding tires, and brakes set on suicide mode. The person driving the vehicle of doom was a struggling college student, with little and or no money. The lady driving a car right off the lot spoke with thick New York accent and had the temper to match. It’s funny how at any moment, thoughts turn into actions, actions turn into events, and suddenly were left to face the aftermath. That day specifically was a mess of intertwining events that lead to two people meeting in unfavorable circumstances.…
