Overall, any benefit or joy alcohol can bring is minimal compared to the greater harms alcohol causes. Although alcohol is harmful to everyone, alcohol harms adolescents much more than older adults. One's brain does not complete development until the age of 25. This time marks a critical period for neurodevelopment. The mind has not fully formed its critical and rational thinking abilities. [1] Studies show that alcohol is deterrent to the process [2] Not only does alcohol consumption affect the brain, it also affects female maturation and reproduction abilities during adolescents [3]. Not only that, but because of an adolescents inability to rationally think or make good judgments, they are more likely to binge drink or engage in heavy alcohol consumption than any other group[4], an action that has obvious negative health effects include liver and brain problems. Many suicides, homicides, motor vehicle accidents and accidental falls are alcohol related [5]. Homicide suicide and accidents are the three leading causes of death among teens. [6] It is unnecessary that alcohol causes the deaths and harmful effects of hundreds of thousands of…

I do not think that the mind of a teenager could handle alcohol, especially if not taught how to drink responsibly. Teens, in my opinion, are not mature enough to be given that open opportunity. I think that it would cause more harm than good. It would be my assumption that if we lowered the drinking age, there would be a higher change of alcoholism and alcohol related deaths among teenagers. That may not be true but it seems as though it would be reasonable to assume so. According to SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) statistics, “during the past month (30 days), 26.4% of underage persons (ages 12-20) used alcohol, and binge drinking among the same age group was 17.4%” and “alcohol use remains extremely widespread among today’s teenagers. Nearly three quarters of students (72%) have consumed alcohol (more than just a few sips) by the end of high school, and more than a third (37%) have done so by eighth grade.” So given these statistics, I believe it is time we step up, as adults and teach our youth the effects of alcohol, good and bad, and to teach them how to consume responsibly. If we do not do this, I believe the underage binge drinking statistics will continue to…

Yet everyone seems to realize the danger of drinking when we are 21. We are allowed to do this new and exciting thing, drink. Then when we are done, we do something that doesn't cross our minds as dangerous. We get in our cars. We've been doing it for 5 years now, we don’t even have to think about it. 10,265 people died due to drinking and driving in 2015 alone. And 1.1 million people were arrested for driving while intoxicated. What I believe should be done to fix this problem is to change the legal ages for drinking and driving. The drinking age should be 16. At this age the body is developed most of the way so that there would not be growth impairment. The child would be under their parent's supervision still so that the drinking would be in a safe and contained environment. This would also take the danger away from teens having to sneak out to parties to drink. The driving age should be 18. By then, the excitement of drinking has died down. Also, they are a bit more grown before they get behind the wheel. I believe that this would make the rate of deaths by drunk drivers go down. It would also make the teen death rate from vehicle accidents in general go…

There will always be people who want to drink underage, and if we were to lower the legal age thinking that we can avoid the problems of dealing with young people drinking, that is wrong. Underage drinking will only get pushed down on to even younger people which is even worse for a 15-year-old to be drinking rather than a 19 or 20-year-old. If not for just the scientific facts of the damage underage drinking does, think back to the proposal at the beginning of this paper, imagine what that would be like to lose a child.
